Lesson  1:  IRs  and  IR  managers  – in  general  – were  left  to  find  their  own  way.  Of  course,  we  weren’t  going  to  make  much  of  a  dent  in  green  OA.  Staffing  and  support  can  make  an  enormous  difference  in  the  success  of  an  IR,  but  IRs  in  and  of  themselves  are  not  going  to  change  the  direction  of  OA.  (we  had  a  chance  and  we  lost  it  mostly)

Lesson  2:If  your  IR  exists  in  a  vacuum,  it  will  suffocate.  IRs  should  be  part  of  your  scholarly  communications  program,  your  collection  management  strategy,  your  discovery  services,  and  within  your  liaison  librarians’  area  of  expertise.  Integrate!

Lesson  3:IRs  can  be  vital  parts  of  the  university  and  should  solve  problems  for  our  faculty  and  students.  How  can  your  IR  be  part  of  undergraduate  research  and  teaching?  Can  you  offer  DOIs  to  researchers  in  need  of  one?  How  flexible  are  you?
