Scaffolding
Teaching Methods That Work
Lori Simonson, 2009
What is Scaffolding?
Scaffolding in Education
Scaffolding in education is very similar to scaffolding in construction.
It is a temporary support system used to support the learner until they have acquired the knowledge needed to support themselves.
How Do I Scaffold?
• Instructors provide support during initial learning. This allows for learners to accomplish tasks they otherwise could not accomplish on their own.
• Once learners develop the new skill, the instructor can gradually remove the scaffolding and then begin to scaffold another new concept.
Strengths of Scaffolding
• Independent Learners• Self-Regulating
Learners• Good Problem Solvers• Provides Individualized
Instruction• Engages the Learner• Motivates the Learner• Minimized Frustration
Level of Learner
Weaknesses of Scaffolding
• Very time consuming.
• Potential for misjudging the Zone of Proximal Development of Learner.
• Inadequately modeling the desired behaviors, strategies, or activities because the teacher has not fully considered the students needs.
Scaffolding
“The teachers provide clarity and support, but the students construct the final result though their research.”
-John McKenzie
