I. General PurposeScaffolding training was held by Safety Committee of MES-TSW JO with some purposes:- Trainee are able to know type of scaffolding, parts of scaffolding, simple

design of scaffolding, strength of simple scaffolding. - Trainiee are informed about the Indonesian Regulation related to OH&S at

workplace. - Trainee are able to count materials needed and able to check it prior to

erection of scaffloding.- Trainee are able to prepare safety equipments needed for the erection of

scaffolding.- Trainee are able to erect scaffolding safely, efectively, and in good quality.- Trainee are able to find mistakes of scaffodling erected and able to repair it.- Trainee are able to dismantling scaffolding safely.- Trainee are able to store scaffolding materials in a safe manner and well

maintained.

II. Schedule Scaffolding training was held on 11 to 14 May 2009. The training started at 08.00 am in the morning and would be ended at 17.00pm every day. For detail information of schedule see the atachment.

III. LocationScaffolding training was held on PT. SSP Training Room.

IV. AttendanceAttendance of the training were from so many sub-contractors as follows: PT. SSP: 6 persons, PT. Acset Indonusa: 5 persons, PT. Murinda: 5 persons, PT. SWI Jetty: 2 persons, PT. Cekatan: 1 person, PT. Indomix Perkasa: 1 persons. Total trainees were 20 persons.

V. TrainerTrainers for the training was Mr. Mulyanto (Bina K3), Mrs. Muktiati (Disnaker Jepara), Mr. Supangat.

VI. Training MethodScaffloding training was devided into two parts: 1. Teoritical (in class). Training in class took place for 3 days or 24 lesson-hours.2. Practical (in the field). Training erecting the scaffolding took place for 1 day

or 8 day lesson-hours.

VIII. Evaluation

After erection of scaffodling trainers and safety committee gathered all scaffolders to the class room. Trainer and safety committee then made evaluation of the training as shown below:

1. ScheduleOn Day 1, Training was scheduled to start at 08.00 am with first holding opening ceremony in which Disnaker will open the meeting offically. The fact, training started started at 09.15 because Disnaker arrived late. Correction: Such a late starting of training should not happened. The trainer should come earlier and started the training on time. After Disnaker arrived, stop the training for a while and held the opening ceremony.

2. Erection of Scaffoldinga. Some scaffolders did not wear helmet wile erecting scaffolding. It was

unsafe action. Correction: all personnel must wear their helmet.b. Scaffolders worked in high position wearing helmet without chin strap.

Helmet oftened fall during the erection. Falling helmet could be the hazard for people working below. It would also slow down the work because the scaffolder must stop working to take his helmet. Correction: all personnel working in high position must use helmet wiht chain strap.

c. Tools (wrenches) used by scaffolder were not tight to the hands or to the belt. Some wrench were falling during the installation. The falling wrench could be hazard for people working below. Correction: all wrench should be tightened to scaffolder’s wrist or belt.

d. Scaffolders ascended and descended the ladder carrying materials as rope, wrench, etc. Using one hand to grip the ladder and other hand to carry materials was very dangerous. Correction: scaffolders should not carry any material using his hand while ascending / descending ladder. Use special means to carry those materials such as putting it into the pocket or waist bag, or using bucket and pull it up or down with rope.

e. Scaffolders hit the scaffolding diagonal tubes to adjust the position. This action could damage the tubes. Correction: if scaffolders want to fix position of the tubes, firs loose the couplers then fix the position of the tubes. Never hit tube using uther tube as it could damage it.

f. Scaffolders throwed couplings and wrench up or down during erection. Throwing materils from the ground to the scaffolding or from scaffolding to the ground was unsafe action. Use bucket or cage or bag and pull the up or down them using rope.

g. Prior to erection scaffolders did not check the numbers of the materials. During the erection they found out that they short of materials. They had to waste some times to wait for additional materials coming. Scaffolders should check materials prior to erection, if the materials is not enough numbers take additional materials prior to erection.

h. During the inspection foud that the scaffolding was not fixed correctly. It was shakcy/unsteady. It perhaps because the scaffolders choosed the wrong type of coupling to use, example: they should use fix couplings

but the used universal couplings. It alaso perhaps because they didnot tighthen the bolts correctly.

i. One team at the beginning time did not work properly as a team. There were more than one people giving instruction causing confusion to the scaffolders and some people did not actively involved in the erection process, they were just watching for few minutes.. In the scaffolding team there should be only one team leader to give instruction and command while the others should actively involved in the erection work.

j. Scaffolders anchoring lanyard in wrong position. Lanyard should be anchored above the upper body not on the foot posisiton. It is meant to prevent high impact betwen the lanyard and the body if there is falling incident.

k. The consentration of the scaffolders was easily called away. During the erection when one person asking them to take picture, they stopped the work and took pictures togehter. Correction, suring erection all scaffolders should concentrate on the work and not to be called out by anything.

l. Access obstrcution found caused by the wrong installation of the diagonal. Correction: access should be free from any obstraction.

After the evaluation, while dismantling the scaffolding, the performance of the trainee was much better. They did not make the same mistake with before.
