Saving Time with Auto-Correct

If you find yourself typing a few specific long words or phrases over and over

again, check out the auto-correct feature in Office. While in Word 2010, go to

File – Options – and click ‘Proofing’ in the left hand pane. Now click the

AutoCorrect Options button.

In the AutoCorrect dialog box,

type a shortcut that you want

to use for a long word or

phrase that you often use. Your

shortcut shouldn’t be something

that you might normally use.

For instance, I wouldn’t use the

shortcut “it” for “Instructional

Technology Services” but I could

use ‘int’. I could also use “sb” to

insert my email address

([email protected])

without typing it. For those of

you with very long email

addresses, think of how much

time you could save. All you have

to do now is type your

shortcut with a space after it

and your shortcut will be

replaced with your phrase

immediately. The autocorrect even

makes email links active. Once you

have made an auto-correct shortcut in Word, that same shortcut will work in other

Office programs (body of an email message, etc.) If it doesn’t appear to work, close

the program them reopen.
