What effect will this have?
Both General Washington (American) and General Howe (British) have the same idea. New York is crucial, because it is the trade and communications link between New England and the South. Loyalists in New York help General Howe to get strategic advantage. Washington bolsters his troops with the reading of the brand new Declaration of Independence.
Synopsis: Howe's fleet arrival nearly traps Washington's ½ sized, less disciplined Continental Army at Long Island.
Battle of Long IslandAugust 27, 1776
As British troops arrive at Staten Island and Long Island, Washington believes the bigger target is Manhattan, and his already low number of troops are divided between Manhattan and Long Island.
General Howe probably did not want to take so many losses like he did at Bunker Hill to win the battle, so he directed his men to create seige lines and dig in.If Howe had pushed onward, he might have captured Washington! However, Washington had used the cover of night and dense fog to ferry his remaining troops across the East River to Manhattan. When Howe's men attacked the next day, the Americans were already gone.
Howe outflanks Washington's officers Lee, Putnam, and Stirling, forcing them to retreat to Brooklyn Heights.
The quiet movement of the troops kept them from being noticed by Gen. Howe's brother, Adm. Howe, who was commanding naval vessels in the harbor and rivers. The weather was too rough for his ships, anyway. Over 1000 captured Americans, at least 300
killed, and another 1,400 wounded...
Washington had sent Nathan Hale to spy for him. He was captured with British plans in the sole of his shoe, and he was hanged without a trial.
"I regret that I have but one life to lose for my country."
Washington began a series of retreats, losing in White Plains and Fort Washington, where Margaret Corbin was the 1st Patriot woman wounded in battle!
