We believe that science is open by definition...
science is a cumulative process - we build on the scientific results of the past
science goes through peer review - we seek out for scientific quality control from our peers
science concerns knowledge sharing - we commit to share our understanding with society to address the challenges of our time

... until we realize this is not really the case
access to knowledge can be very expensive - subscription costs to scholarly journals keep rising
the fear to share is a reality - too often source data, code or metadata are not available

so... are we all doomed?

The internet era is the right timefor open science
• Open in the way we produce knowledge• foster collaborations and creativity• build much more efficiently on previous work
• Open in the way we access knowledge• make the work available to anyone• maximize the usefulness of individual research effort
• Open for anyone to access and (re)use research data

Data should become first-class citizensin science
• Data lead to information, which leads to knowledge, which leads to new principles
• How can we talk about data sharing, if we do not give full rights to the data? • making data available is only one half of the open data equation -
intelligent access & interoperability are crucial
• research data must be accompanied by metadata
• data need to be considered legitimate, persistent, unique and citable products of research
• Research data can transform society!

RDA is the perfect place for this to happen
“RDA wants to build the
social and technical bridges
to make data sharing happen in Science”

The RDA early career program is a unique opportunity to join a Plenary
• What does RDA do for you? • it covers your travel and subsistence costs to attend RDA Plenary (Tokyo
was supercool!)
• it gives you visibility with poster sessions to show your research (https://goo.gl/vsz5Gi)
• it offers you a great opportunity to learn about research data, meet people from literally everywhere, and discover the RDA world
• What can you do for RDA?• support the activities of IGs, WGs and BoFs
(Heath data IG, Data citation WG)
• write a blog to share your Plenary experience

Health data challenges IG @P7
• Health data are unique in terms of complexity and privacy issues
• A huge amount of health data is produced, but only a small percentage of them is mined
• Knowledge discovery and data mining can enable in silico drug development and clinical trials
• A balance between the rights of the patients and the rights of the data is essential, but hard to be obtained
• A formulation of a dynamic, long-term informed consent is crucial
