Serial pre-cataloging decisions

• If online resource, separate description or provider-neutral record or link on record for print?

• Applying CONSER Standard Record guidelines? Adding more elements?

• If covered by existing AACR2 record, adding information or converting record to RDA?

• Deciding if covered by existing record or if creating a new description is needed

Need a new description?

• Change in mode of issuance• Change in media type• Major change in title proper• Change in responsibility requiring change in

identification of the serial work• Change in edition statement indicating

significant change in subject or scope

Authorized Access Points

• Not abbreviating “Department” (should not have abbreviated in AACR2 headings)

• Conferences– Retain frequency in the name– Omit location, numbers, and dates

Page 23: RDA & Serials. RDA Toolkit CONSER RDA Cataloging Checklist for Textual Serials (DRAFT) CONSER RDA Core Elements Where’s that Tool? CONSER RDA Cataloging

Relationships

Page 24: RDA & Serials. RDA Toolkit CONSER RDA Cataloging Checklist for Textual Serials (DRAFT) CONSER RDA Core Elements Where’s that Tool? CONSER RDA Cataloging

Relationships

• No core relationships• Decisions to include relationships are based

on cataloger’s judgment and on cataloging policy.

Page 25: RDA & Serials. RDA Toolkit CONSER RDA Cataloging Checklist for Textual Serials (DRAFT) CONSER RDA Core Elements Where’s that Tool? CONSER RDA Cataloging

Relationships betweenGroup 1 and Group 2

• Chapters 18 to 22 provide guidelines for recording relationships between Group 1 entities (i.e., work, expression, manifestation, and item) and Group 2 entities (i.e., person, family and corporate body).

• Chapter 17 of RDA is not currently being applied.

Page 26: RDA & Serials. RDA Toolkit CONSER RDA Cataloging Checklist for Textual Serials (DRAFT) CONSER RDA Core Elements Where’s that Tool? CONSER RDA Cataloging

Relationships betweenGroup 1 and Group 2

• Relationships are expressed by providing an identifier or an authorized access point for the person, family or corporate body

• In the MARC environment, designators are added in subfield $e at the end of authorized access points.

• When a serial publication has a change in responsibility that does not require a new description, additional access points for Group 2 entities associated with later issues (e.g., different issuing bodies for later issue of journal) can be given.

Page 27: RDA & Serials. RDA Toolkit CONSER RDA Cataloging Checklist for Textual Serials (DRAFT) CONSER RDA Core Elements Where’s that Tool? CONSER RDA Cataloging

Creator Element

• Chapter 19• Is a relationship to the work being identified …

not an attribute of the work• If more than one creator at same time:

110 $a First-named creator on issue, $e author. 710 $a Second-named creator on same issue, $e

author.

Page 28: RDA & Serials. RDA Toolkit CONSER RDA Cataloging Checklist for Textual Serials (DRAFT) CONSER RDA Core Elements Where’s that Tool? CONSER RDA Cataloging

Corporate body as creator

• Categories of works given in RDA 19.2.1.1 (similar to AACR2 21.1B2) -- not roles of bodies

• Includes government and religious officials for some categories of works

• Corporate body takes precedence over a first-named person or family as creator
