I asked 15 people what gender they are, so that I could base my CD cover around a particular artist which would appeal to the majority of people I surveyed, in this case I interviewed 67% female (just over 2/3), this therefore shows that my music video will be majority aimed at females although I will still include aspects which will appeal to males as well, as although they only obtained 33% of the results, that was also down to me surveying not as many of them.

I asked 15 people how old they are, so I could target my audience seeing what age most commonly listened to indie/pop music and would be interested in buying a newly released indie track. The most common age group I interviewed were 16-25, as 67% I surveyed were this age. However, 36-45 year olds didn’t complete any questionnaires, so I will therefore have no information about their customer needs, therefore my CD will not be targeted towards them (though some of the ideas they may like). I will target my CD towards 16-25 year olds by making the lyrics in the songs more relatable to those going through relationship difficulties like most 16-25 year olds.

• From this particular question, I can quite clearly see that pop was the my target audience’s favourite genre with 35%, followed narrowly with indie at 34%. This is beneficial to my research as I was going to go with an indie/pop music video beforehand and these results confirm that my target audience like this genre and that it would work successfully. I can also take from these results the soul was the third favourite with 15% and therefore I might include elements of soul within my video as well in order to appeal to others, therefore making my music video appeal to 84% of my target audience overall.

• This particular pie chart shows me that 91% of my target audience watch music videos, with 42% of them watching them everyday. This was useful as I was then able to get a more in depth response when asking them questions such as ‘What settings do you like to see in music videos and why?’ therefore as I have a vast amount of people who watch music videos a lot I was given a very in depth answer to this particular question and was given several unique responses one being Cuba, therefore it shows that by my target audience watching several different music videos per day, that they as consumers are also given different connotations and that they watch music videos daily as a hobby and something to pass the time by.

• Overall, my target audience’s favourite music video was Michael Jackson – Thriller as this achieved 20% of the votes out of 12 responses given to this particular question. They claimed it was their favourite music video as ‘it was before it’s time’ and ‘it offered something new’ , noticeably it was both participants over the age of 56+ and the 46-55 participants who said that this was their favourite music video. This is interesting as this was obviously a song from their time period as it was released in 1982 this may suggest that when they got older and had other commitments that they stopped watching music videos as they simply didn’t get the time anymore, for example if we assume that the participant who is in the 46-55 year old category was born in 1969, then they would have been 13 when the song was released, therefore this could explain the fact in which this particular song signalled a new era for music videos and could also resemble the fact that they stopped watching music videos when they got older although they might have still listened to them on the radio for example. It was also noticeable that Taylor Swift had three different songs in the favourite music video category, the fact in which she has three different songs resembles the fact in which she appeals to 16-25 year olds and they were the category in which we surveyed the most. The reasons as to why people like her music videos so much are because they’re ‘engaging’ and because ‘the lyrics are relatable’.

• Interestingly, from this question although Taylor Swift got three separate votes for favourite music video, it is odd that she only received one vote for ‘Who is your favourite artist and why?’. Beyonce and Jess Glynne both received two votes each with therefore ties them at 13% this again reflects the type of artist I am going for as Jess Glynne is an indie/pop and soul singer who is one of the artists we are trying to be like as well as accommodating other artist styles within our music video as well.

• High budget music videos, appeal to 73% of my target audience and therefore they like elements such as vibrant colours and a better quality production. With a better quality production, I make sure the camera and equipment I am using is up to the best standard possible, this is important so that I can give my audience a clear cut music video in which they are looking for and so that the vibrant colours come across in the way in which they are hoping for.

• City (London) and outside (beach), were the two most popular settings with 27% and 20% respectively. Locations which would work with an indie/pop feel in which I am going for would be the city (London) because of its vibrant light and good scenery, this would also work with outside and although I don’t think I’ll be filming on a beach, I have thought about filming near water and having water aspects included within the music video in order to create the outside sense of freedom. I have also done this in order to try and make my music video relatable to my target audience so that it may remind them of a previous occasion when listening to similar music

• 44% of my target audience responded that they wouldn’t like to watch a rock music video, although previously in Q3 (What is your favourite music genre?) rock had 8%, so therefore this shows that a few people like rock music but that the majority wouldn’t want to watch a music video of it. Indie/pop received 0 percent; therefore we can assume that everybody would be interested in watching a music video based upon that concept

• My target audience recommended me to go with fancy/prestigious fashion with 33%, this would go well with my indie vibe as I can incorporate this within my music video. The use of normal clothes (20%) will be valuable to use as I don’t want my music video to be too over the top and I still want it to have elements of realism whilst still using bright colours.

• Vibrant colours are what attract people to newly released music videos with 19% of people agreeing with this. This is useful to know as I was going to include vibrant colours within my own music video and from the results of my questionnaire, this has highlighted the fact that this would be a useful way in order to attract my potential target audience.

• Typically from my results, it shows that people only really watch artists that they like (53% 8/15 agreed to this). Therefore, this could be a potential hazard to me as I am producing a one of video. In order to overcome this I will advertise my website before hand and will release a special clip of another song also on the CD.

• The majority of my target audience agreed that they’d like to watch an indie/pop music video, therefore it has gave me the confidence to go ahead with the idea as I think it will be successful and that it will appeal to a mass market. The 20% who answered no to this particular question were the two 56+ participants and the reasoning behind this was because they didn’t know the genre. Therefore, I have achieved a successful target audience in 16-25 year olds, who also like other indie popstars, such as Taylor Swift, Jess Glynne and Ella Eyre

Which of these locations would be good for an indie music video?City Park Lake Field Studio

Page 29: Questionnaire results and analysis

• From my research I have found that the city (London) and the field would be the best locations to use for an indie/pop music video as they both achieved 25% of the votes. Therefore, these have obviously been highly successful locations in the past for previous indie videos and If I go about filming these particular locations at the right time then hopefully my final music video will have a more realistic feel to it.
