SEXOut of the eight responses to my questionnaire, 75% of the

participants were female (6 people) and 25% were male (2 people). This therefore gives me thoughts from both and I can therefore tailor

my film opening to appeal to and for it to be enjoyed by both men and women.

AGEThe majority of the questionnaire participants were over 30 years old.

In my head I wanted my film opening to be aimed at a younger audience, meaning that the results I receive back from this

questionnaire are not going to be 100% useful to me when I come to making my film opening. Despite this, the other 50% of participants (made up from 38% below 18 yo and 13% 18-30 yo) are younger.

These responses in particular will be very important to me in regards to finding the right target audience and their requirements.

FAVOURITE GENRE OF FILMThere were a wide range of replies to this question in the questionnaire,

which made it difficult to put in to a chart. The screenshot image from the questionnaire results, shows that there are 8 different answers: true stories,

sci-fi, bildungsroman, indie, action, musicals, romcoms and dramas. Unfortunately none of the participants chose crime or horror genres, which

my two ideas are based around. Although these answers have not been given in this question, I still believe that there is an audience for crime and

horror films and I will continue to pursue my two ideas.

DO YOU LIKE - CRIME & HORROR?Although the genres of crime or horror were not on any of the participant’s

favourite genres, 75% of them liked crime films and 63% of them liked horror films. This shows for definite that there is still an audience for both

genres.

With the horror film results, the people who replied saying that they didn’t like the genre were over 30 years old. This does not concern me because as

I have previously stated, I want my film to be targeted at a younger audience. Whereas with the results on the crime film, the ‘no’ responses

were from people within the > 18 category. This is a cause for concern because it highlights that people my provisional target audience are

possibly not going to like what I am going to make.

HOW OFTEN DO YOU WATCH FILMS?As you can see from the pie chart below, there is a split

between the participants watching films sometimes and watching films often. This is a result that I am happy about

because it emphasises that the majority of people participating in my questionnaire are reliable; they watch films regularly and will probably understand what I am looking for in

terms of answers. Also, the films that they are watching are going to be modern, therefore meaning any answers that they

provide will be relevant to me in some way or another.

GENERALLY, DO FILM OPENINGS MAKE YOU WANT TO CONTINUE WATCHING A FILM? Everybody from the questionnaire replied yes to this question.

Obviously, this brings to my attention that my film opening has to be exciting and be inclusive of all the different expected

features to make sure it is as successful as possible. As everyone has said yes, it shows that quite a lot of people will

not continue to watch a film if it has a bad opening. If I was creating a whole film, the opening would be a priority of mine

as from this research I have realised how important it is, directly from an audience’s point of view.

FOR YOU PERSONALLY, WHAT WOULD YOU EXPECT IN A FILM OPENING?

I asked this question because I already had an idea that the answer to the previous question would result the way it did. I

therefore needed to understand what the audience expectations were to make the film opening as intriguing as possible. The below image shows exactly what the participants expect. My

ideas that I have at current can be easily adapted to be inclusive of the majority, if not all, of these expectations. These answers

have provided me with an understanding of what I need to include in my opening to make it appeal to a target audience, and as a

result be successful.

CONCLUSIONAll of the replies to my questionnaire were gratefully accepted, and

for definite will help me when I come to planning out my film opening.

One thing that surprised me from the questionnaire was the variation on the question asking what the questionnaire participant’s favourite

genre was. Personally I thought that everybody would go down the action/crime/thriller/horror route. However with the age and gender

variation I can see how this answer came about. One answer that I was expecting was where everyone said that a film

opening definitely influences them in to continuing to watch a film. Due to my expectation I added in the next question, asking what

their expectations were from a film opening to make it to appeal to them. I think that from a research point of view I got the most out of this question. I now basically have a checklist that I can compare my

film opening against to make sure that I can match it to what the audience want as well as I possibly can.
