The museum was founded in 1842 by an initiative put forth by 50 aristocratic families that wanted to have a place of their own for their deceased.

The cemetery was declared museum in 1998 and Cultural Heritage of the Nation in 1999

thanks to its architecture, and the historical and artistic content of its mausoleums.

It holds the remains of important artists, businessmen, industrialists, and politicians.

Museo de Antioquia

The Museum was founded in 1881 a group, including Manuel Uribe Angel, Antonio José Restrepo and Martin Gómez, established the Zea Museum in honor of Francisco Antonio Zea.

The first collection contained books and historical and artistic artifacts of its founders.

The Museum is located in the facilities formerly occupied by the old Palacio Municipal; and now cataloged as a National Monument.

The Museo de Antioquia offers visitors the opportunity to appreciate temporary, itinerant, and permanent exhibits.

Its salons hold pre-Hispanic, Colonial, Republican, and Contemporary art,

including paintings, sculptures, photographs, caricatures, and drawings by national and international artists.
