what is Copyright

How are things copyrighted and what can I do with them?

• Basically, if you create it, you’ve copyrighted it (but sometimes you need to prove you created it)

• In the EU, it’s your moral right to:

• Claim authorship of the work

• Object to any distortion, mutilation, or modification of the work

• Object to any derogatory action that may damage the authors honor or reputation

What is protected by copyright?

• Literary Works

• Musical Works (including accompanying words)

• Dramatic works (including accompanying music)

• Pantomimes and choreographic works

• Pictorial, graphic and sculptural works

• Motion pictures and other audiovisual works

• Sound recordings

• Architectural works

• Computer software

Why do you care?

• Do you create things?

How to Protect Yourself: Copyright

• Submit your works to be copyrighted, if your home country has a copyright office (good luck in China)

• Create evidence of ownership

• Be proactive

How to Protect Yourself: Creative Commons

• An alternative to copyright

• simple, easy to understand descriptions of who can do what with your work

• Instead of “all rights reserved” of copyright, it’s “some rights reserved”

• Allows others to share, build, or create using your material, as long as they recognize you created it to begin with.
