this renovation added three feet to the end of the house and opened the second floor into a master suite. With direction from the principal I performed the entirety of drafting and modeling, along with minor ca duties.

the addition of three feet to the south end of the house required an accurate section because of the effect on every level of the project, including reusing existing foundations and extending the pitch of the roof.

The owners wanted to add a second floor master suite and do a substantial remodel to the rest of the house. I did the entirety of the drafting on the project, had minimal design duties, researched the appropriate materials and methods and worked on every step of permitting. I was able to keep a close relationship with the contractor, consultants and clients, ultimately leading to a smooth project.

The client wanted a small, detached accessory dwelling unit built in the back yard. I took roughly drafted plans from a contractor and drew as-built plans and all architectural drawings and details. I also worked with a structural engineer to put together structural details for the new building.

On multiple projects for an assisted-living organization, I drafted the entirety of the permit set for interior renovations. Working with assisted-living units in a multi-residential building was a great chance to diversify my experience.

The client owns two condos on the island of Maui and wanted to renovate them as much as possible. I put together a design development set, including some structural and electrical plans and created a detailed 3d model to convey design options. I later furthered the design and rendered the interior of the kitchen of one unit.

I participated in the design and drafting of several components of this remodel of a stately home in San Francisco. I contributed design to the built-in seating at the breakfast nook as well as for the custom coat rack and storage piece. I also drafted many of the details in the kitchen and at door casings throughout the house. I also laid out tile in the bathrooms, coordinated lighting fixtures, drew elevations for the kitchen and the short, paneled hallway which was finished in a high-gloss Kelly Green.

The owners of this historic Palo Alto estate asked us to completely renovate the interior. The exterior could only have minor modifications on the street-facing sides, but I was asked to design a new stairwell and sunroom on the back sides of the house. I also began the drafting and set layout and created a detailed 3d model in SketchUp to visualize options for the client. I later rendered these images from the model.

three sticks Winery

This small adobe storehouse in Sonoma, California is over 150 years old. three sticks winery purchased the lot it was on and asked us to restore it along with the adjacent abode (not adobe). i created a detailed 3d model of the storehouse in sketchUp and drew elevations for the presentation package.

TH E BATTERY SF - P r ivate Club

I was brought on to aid in construction administration for this 50,000 sf adaptive-reuse project in downtown San Francisco. Along with tracking and responding to RFIs, shop drawings and submittals, I was busy coordinating light fi xtures, researching materials, drawing details and designing various components of the project such as awnings and guard rails.


I took part in the design of the ‘B’ mosaic tile pattern that was featured in the bathroom spaces. This card room, hidden behind a secret door in the bar’s bookcase, required several details clarified during construction.

The board-formed plaster finish in the entry and spa areas required carefully laying out the board joints. A close up of the mosaic ‘B’ tile pattern and corner detail, above. The limited wall space at the entry door area required carefully coordinating and laying out various components such as the intercom, knox box and gas wall fixtures.

The restaurant, 717, and lounge spaces on the ground fl oor have many different accent fi xtures throughout which required coordination. This involved reviewing specifi cations and placing each on drawings to ensure they don’t interfere with eachother. I also drew and designed the guard rail at the 717 bar and restaurant area.

Working with Consumption Concepts, an energetic, fast-paced firm, I helped the team meet a crucial deadline, conceptualizing a layout for the unique space and assembling a presentation package of renderings and plan layout. i created a detailed model of the potential space and illustrated its potential.

This visitor center for Sequoia National Park aims to be an architectural ambassador, both for the park to the people, and for the built environment to its site. By creating a shelter that houses exhibits and utilizes large openings to connect visitors with the lessons available in the immediate surroundings it highlights the importance of the preservation work done in the park. By showcasing a variety of materials, each utilized for specific purposes, employing exposed connections and overall, remaining a modest component of the surroundings, it strives to be the highest representation of the built environment.

New Music is an avant garde style that often utilizes unique performance spaces to deliver unique experiences. This center for new music, situated across Grand Avenue from the Gehry’s Walt Disney Concert Hall, is a campus for the exploration and performance of New Music. For this quarter-long project that included studies on acoustics and extensive case studies, I used the concept of the building serving as a phonograph horn, projecting the sounds into the far reaches of the city streets. the harsh angles that pervade and permeate the site are a result of acoustical studies intended to provide precise reverberation qualities within the main venue, and the language was continued outside.

AU X I LI A RY I N TERSTATE CROSSI NG - Publ ic Space Intervent ion

The Cortez Hill neighborhood of downtown San Diego is pocketed by a curve in I-5 freeway which cuts a deep rift between it and Balboa Park to the North. By instituting a covering structure, or “lid”, over a section of the freeway at 5th 6th and 7th avenues it would both reconnect the two and create an additional amenity space for community gardens, businesses, outdoor venues and more, as well as reduce road noise from the freeway below. The form comes from the symbolism of stitching the gap together, and each pathway is placed to form a connection from one sidewalk to another, a running path to a dog park, etc. Because the neighborhood is defined by its walkable, quiet streets, the paths connected are for pedestrians only, with cars relegated to crossing only at the 5th avenue bridge as they do currently.

the Rolando clay neighborhood of san diego is in need of revitalization. as part of a group of three students, we devised an urban plan that focused on pedestrians by implementing traffic slowing features, changing the scale of the surrounding buildings and created small districts within the community. These districts utilized pedestrian-oriented streets, plazas and parks to bring the surrounding community outdoors and out of their cars.

PER I PH ERY - San Diego Aerospace Museum

The building celebrates flight most simply in the undulating shapes that accompany visitors throughout the exhibit. These forms were directly inspired by the joy and exhilaration of flight itself. They pay homage to the twists and turns of aerial acrobatics and the furthest limits of flight that we know today. The building strives to educate visitors about aviation and its history. This goal cannot be accomplished without anyone there to educate. The building addresses this directly by drawing the appropriate attention, thus sparking the interest and curiosity that is so crucial in education. The walls serve as a canvas for the pieces on display and help in creating an atmosphere in which visitors will not only see them, but experience them on a different level. The space conveys inspiration through a wholistic experience. The glory and awe of aviation is in danger of being lost to newer generations. As flight becomes an ever more integral part of our daily lives it becomes less and less fantastic. The building serves to communicate to all generations that flight is a remarkable achievement that should not be taken for granted.

3rd year studio - rÜdiger thierhoff - 2010

Working with a partner, he and I did extensive code, structural and market research to arrive at the proper room sizes etc. The collaboration went so well that we later worked together professionally. Located in the East Village district of downtown San Diego, this high-rise residential tower houses students of the NewSchool of Architecture and Design which is across the street. The fl oor plates of the tower change as it ascends and therefor offer three slightly different confi gurations throughout. The program consists of small dorm rooms in the tower, while at the base of the tower is a three story building which is constructed using recycled materials from a condemned brick building in the neighborhood which houses several higher-end loft residences as well as the communities amenity spaces such as the gym and study spaces. There are also retail spaces at the ground level which face the street and the interior courtyard.

U R BA N CA N YON - New Urban Campus for NSA+D

Inspired by the local canyons of San Diego, the massing of this building was shaped by subtracting from the allowable building area to allow for more light and to add an organic shape to the building. The new urban campus for the NewSchool of Architecture and Design continues the open space of Balboa Park from across the street onto the rooftop and incorporates it as an integral gathering space for students and faculty. The south west corner employs a perforated metal screen in crucial places to lessen heat gain and natural ventilation is utilized throughout, further capitalizing on the areas mild climate.

The only requirements for this second year studio project were that it needed to be a residence on this sloped site and that it needed to accommodate an inhabitant in a wheelchair without relying on an elevator. inspired by bart prince and Bruce Goff I imagined a form that swooped down the hillside in gentle slopes and curves.

The sketching process led me from early explorations in sun exposure and sight lines to detailed stylistic conclusions. Quickly documenting a fleeting idea for a plan layout scheme or fleshing-out the specifics of an otherwise more general design is easiest for me in hand sketching. While more precise 3d modeling can lend a more accurate con-ception of the space, sketching remains the purest form of idea-generation throughout the project.

A 10” hunting knife with black walnut handle, brass finger guard and tempered 1040 carbon steel blade. As part of a 10-day course at (now defunct) Sierra Forge & Fire I worked alongside mastersmith Mike Vagnino to take this knife from design to finish.The process included drawing and shaping the blade; drawing and shaping the handle; assembling the materials together; and finally sharpening and finishing. I later created a leather sheath for it.

My first experience with acrylic painting was a wedding gift for friends - a fun and ridiculous 48”x36” portrait of their cats. As a complete amateur I spent countless hours adding color for detail and abstract shapes. the process taught a valuable lesson in the importance of shading.
