Writers and advertisers use many techniques to convince you to agree with them or buy their product.
An emotional appeal tries to make the reader connect the writer’s message with an important feeling.
B -- BandwagonB -- Bandwagon
Should you by a product just because it is the most popular?
The bandwagon technique appeals to the reader’s need to belong and to do what everyone is doing.
Basic NeedsBasic Needs
The basic needs technique tries to connect your need for

to agreement with the writer’s opinion.

• This example came from an ad for a low fat frozen dinner. What basic need does it appeal to?
E -- ExpertE -- Expert
The testimonial technique uses a famous person or someone who looks like a normal, average person.
The testimonial tries to connect the writer’s opinion to the reader’s feeling about this person.
E -- ExpertE -- Expert
• This man seems like a normal, likeable guy.
• The text is written as if he is talking directly to the reader.
• The picture also uses another emotional appeal. Can you identify it?
Expert -- Snob AppealExpert -- Snob Appeal
• This model is Cybil Shepard, who is popular with older adults.
• Advertisers use famous models to sell clothing because many people want to look as beautiful as the model.
A - AnecdoteA - Anecdote
• Add a scene or story in just a few sentences to connect with the reader, explain your point, and add interest
R - Rhetorical QuestionR - Rhetorical Question
• Wouldn’t you offer to help?
• A question that doesn’t need an answer.
S - StatisticsS - Statistics
• Add facts and statistics
• Seventy percent of homeowners are adding natural landscapes.
• Three out of four plants are drought resistant

• Emotional appeal techniques can be extremely effective in persuading the reader to act on a feeling.
• As readers of persuasive writing, we must learn to recognize emotional appeals.
• If we focus on the facts instead of the feelings, we will make a better decision about the writer’s opinion.
• As persuasive writers, we can use these techniques to persuade others.

• Introduction– Grab/Invite Reader -- Ask a question/ tell a
story (anecdote)– State your opinion and three reasons using
strong, but polite language• Students should wear white t-shirts as uniforms
to prevent gang affiliation, stop teasing, and reduce the cost of school clothes.
• What is the structural design of my essay?
The design of the 5-6 paragraph essay is quite simple:
• The Introduction with a strong lead-in, both sides of the issue, your thesis statement telling your side of the issue and the reasons that support your thesis.
• Body: Your well-elaborated first reason with specific examples.Your well-elaborated second reason with specific examples and refutations.Your well-elaborated third reason with specific examples.
Your well-elaborated fourth reason with specific examples.(if paragraph two is only refutations)
• The Conclusion where you restate your thesis with your 3 reasons and a strong, decisive closing statement and a call to action.
