An emotional appeal tries to make the reader connect the writer’s message with an important feeling.

The bandwagon technique appeals to the reader’s need to belong and to do what everyone is doing.

The testimonial tries to connect the writer’s opinion to the reader’s feeling about this person.

• As readers of persuasive writing, we must learn to recognize emotional appeals.

• If we focus on the facts instead of the feelings, we will make a better decision about the writer’s opinion.

• As persuasive writers, we can use these techniques to persuade others.

• What is the structural design of my essay?

The design of the 5-6 paragraph essay is quite simple:

• The Introduction with a strong lead-in, both sides of the issue, your thesis statement telling your side of the issue and the reasons that support your thesis.

• Body: Your well-elaborated first reason with specific examples.Your well-elaborated second reason with specific examples and refutations.Your well-elaborated third reason with specific examples.

Your well-elaborated fourth reason with specific examples.(if paragraph two is only refutations)

• The Conclusion where you restate your thesis with your 3 reasons and a strong, decisive closing statement and a call to action.
