The Fish Strategy

• The FISH Strategy can be used with students who have a solid understanding of letters and sounds, rhyming words, and letter substitution.

• It is used to help students learn what to do when they reach a word they do not know how to read.

Let’s look at an example of the FISH strategy.

Your child is reading aloud to you and comes to a word he/she does not know!

“Let’s go to my……What is that word, Mommy?” (house)

Other recommendations for working with your child to improve their reading skills:

Read to them, but also listen to them read aloud to you

Read at least 5 days a week for “15-20 minutes… in a quiet room with adequate lighting and no distractions” (p. 249)

Use a calendar to keep track of how often you worked together

Give positive praise often!
