Geometry Consolidated by two Greek words ‘geo’ – meaning earth, and ‘metron’ – meaning measure

Over time geometry is much more than ‘earth measuring’, today it is regarded to be the ‘mathematics of space’

Foundation Year, Year 1, Year 2 and Year 3
• By the end of Foundation Year learners are able to describe position and movement
• By the end of year one learners aim to give and follow directions to familiar locations
• By the end of year two, learners aim to interpret simple maps of familiar locations and identify the relative positions of key features, investigate the effect of one step slide flips and identify and describe half and quarter turns
• In year 3 learners go on to create and interpret simple grid maps to show position and pathways, and identify symmetry in the environment

Geometry Word Wall• Initial work with young children revolves
around the use and understanding of the many words associated with location. Children need to be introduced to and use everyday language for position such as beside, behind, in front, next to, on top, under and over of concepts
(Siemon, et al., 2011, p. 465 & Booker et al, 2010 p. 465).

Geometry Bingo• This activity is designed to provide the
opportunity for learners to engage with the language of geometry
• The language of geometry plays a vital role in developing spatial sense. Language has a dual function for children learning shape and space ideas. It allows them to describe concepts and communicate ideas and findings so that others might hear their thinking and reasoning (and vice versa) and helps ideas to form in their minds as they grapple with words and images.

• Teachers need to listen to and observe children carefully so they become aware of how children learn
• Will enable introduction to appropriate activities suited to each individual’s level of functioning
