Evaluation Question 4

How did you use new media technologies in the construction and research, planning

and evaluation stages?

What are “New Media Technologies”?

• These forms of technology are the latest and greatest pieces of hardware as well as software, that enable people to connect and create.

• From augmented reality to social networking, new technology has many different uses and purposes.

• Examples of this new media technology include: 1. Computers2. Cameras 3. Smart Phones 4. Social Network Websites – Facebook and Twitter5. Computer Software – Photoshop and Final Cut

Pro

Technologies Used• As part of our coursework, we as a group and

individually used various technologies that helped us in producing multimedia pieces of work.

• Websites – Blogger, Prezi, Glogster, Capzles, Slideshare, Facebook, YouTube, Dafont, Scribd.

• Hardware – DSLR Camera Image/Video, Studio Lighting, Tripod, Mac Computer, iPhone Smartphone, Voice Recorder.

• Software – Safari, Internet Explorer, Photoshop, Final Cut Pro, InDesign, Garageband, PowerPoint, Word

• BLOGGER was the main site we used in order to upload our coursework online and so we could present our work in a timeline structure and how we progressed from research to construction.

• PREZI allowed us to present our work in a different methods, using an interactive and motion driven form of presentation to show ideas and plans.

• GLOGSTER was also another way for us to present out work in a poster style that uses animations to show again ideas and planning.

• CAPZLES is a site that helped show off the photographs we had taken during filming in a scrolling animation.

• SLIDESHARE was used so that we could put PowerPoint presentations onto a our blog rather than doing individual slides at one time.

• FACEBOOK had given us a way to get audience feedback interactively, so we used this for our audience research and feedback on our ancillary tasks and short film.

• YOUTUBE gave us a way of uploading videos from when we were filming to show what we were doing on a day to day basis and to show how we were preparing to make the short film.

• DAFONT offered various font styles that we used when creating our ancillary tasks for both our posters and double page spreads.

• SCRIBD was again used as another way to upload presentations to our blog

How did we use the technology? - Hardware• SMARTPHONES were used track our progress with the storyboard and to also

access information for the coursework brief, so that we included everything we needed accurately and effectively.

• MACS/PCS were our main piece of hardware. We used them to edit our movie, upload and edit photos, edit our blogs, listen to voice recordings and also for our different ancillary tasks with the various software's.

• DSLR CAMERAS had two functions, both to take images whilst we were planning and filming as proof of our work and also to film our actual short film.

• STUDIO LIGHTING was used during filming so that we could have different effects on the final film, whilst it was also used for continuity of lighting.

• TRIPODS were needed for our cameras so that we reach different angles and positions that we’d planned during our storyboard, without adding any form of camera shake if done manually

• VOICE RECORDERS were provided so we could put voiceovers on our short film to make our narrative much clearer.

• FINAL CUT PRO was used on the Mac’s in order to edit our short film with both visual and sound effects.

• PHOTOSHOP was important helping us to edit photographs and to also create our short film posters as we could experiment with various effects and settings.

• SAFARI/INTERNET EXPLORER provided a connection between most of our technologies so we could access our blogs, social networks and also the websites we used.

• INDESIGN helped us create our double page spreads.• GARAGEBAND was briefly used to upload our recorded voices for the short film

voiceovers.• POWERPOINT is some software which helped us present our work in a

structured way, such as our initial ideas for our short film. • WORD was helpful in creating our plans before we started filming, and also

with creating questionnaires for some audience research.

Technology ImagesHere we are setting up the studio lighting which we used to try and add different lighting effects and continuity whilst filming. If we didn’t have this technology, we would've of had to have filmed at different times of the day and relied on natural light to be in our favor.

This is one of the examples for when we used the DSLR Camera, which helped us film our short film and take photos.

Data was automatically stored on a memory card which could then be transferred to a computer.

This is one position in which we used the tripod to film from different angles and positions to make an effective short film. The tripod itself allows for unique positions that would not be possible If we didn’t have this hardware, and we would've most likely had to have positioned the camera manually or try and find some way to fix the camera into a position.

YouTube allowed us to upload our short film onto the internet whilst also being able to upload our daily update videos. This is a very useful platform and prevents the need for copying material into hardware form.

This is the smartphone we used to to track both or progress via blogger and our storyboard and also to get audience research through social networks. Without this technology, we would've had to have relied on paper based materials that could perhaps be lost.

This MAC is where we spent most of our time, editing, uploading and completing work such as the short film and ancillary tasks. Without all the software it provides, we would've had to have had used many different resources outside the college which would've been very time consuming.

Page 10: Media Evaluation Euestion 4

This is another example of one of the websites we used. Glogster helped us present some of our planning and research in a graphic interactive form. Without these sort of sites, we most likely again would rely on paper based materials that would be time consuming to create.

Here's three examples of the software we used on the MAC’s. Safari was the main internet browser we used for our research and planning whilst Photoshop and InDesign helped us to create our ancillary tasks and edit photos. Without these, editing and searching would take much longer, and would probably less impressive and extensive.

Evaluation • The transferring of digital data has made our work and roles much

easier when creating our film as a group or be it when doing our individual tasks.

• Software such as Final Cut Pro has enabled us to improve our short films and make the better for our audience through the use of editing tools, addition of sound files and transitions, whilst Photoshop has made creating posters for ancillary tasks as there are a large number of settings to help vary images.

• The importance of the internet along with these new technologies is second to none, as it has allowed us to conduct different types of audience research, whilst it has also given us access to comparative texts be it for our short film or for the ancillary tasks.

• Furthermore, these technologies allow us to be more of a prosumer as we’re able to research what people want from media products such as the ones we’ve made and as a result can easily create new versions to please the audience.

• Overall, new media technologies allows us to be more creative with pieces of work, whilst being able to present them in multiple different manners.
