My media product has used the usual forms and conventions by following

typical magazine templates/layouts in the

front cover, contents page and double-page

spread. I have also used a house style throughout the magazine to connect the pages and produce a solid and well-structured

magazine appearance.

IN WHAT WAYS DOES YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT USE, DEVELOP AND CHALLENGE FORMS AND

CONVENTIONS OF REAL MEDIA PRODUCTS?

My masthead follows conventions as it is placed at the top of the magazine

front cover which is a typical place for a masthead. The text is also bold so it is

noticeable and is not too complex. However the masthead is slightly tilted

upwards which is challenging conventions as most mastheads are

straight. I decided to do this because my magazine is aimed at a young

audience and so they like a magazine which isn’t the same as the rest so this

is a good way to make it a little different to the normal magazine. The reason they want a different magazine

is because they are growing up and want to feel like they are independent and are different so a magazine which

can be an appealing as it is a little different seems like a bit of a rebellious

magazine to buy.

As my magazine is of the pop genre but is a country edition I have used props associated with the western culture.

These are props such as cowboy boots, classic guitars and a cowboy hat. This is following conventions as it is following the typical props of the genre however

because my magazine is usually focused on the pop genre it challenges what the

readers would usually see on a pop magazine. The model on my front cover is

wearing a cowboy hat to portrait the western genre and is also carrying a

guitar on her back. The guitar instantly shows the musical side of the image and suggests to the reader that the model is

going to be featured in the magazine representing music. The models on my contents page are wearing jackets and

tops which are also a stereotypical western wear and so they all fit with the

genre.

COSTUMES & PROPS

I have chosen my main feature model as a female with long brown hair. This is

because western woman usually have long hair along with wearing a western hat. She is smiling on each picture as this

creates a friendly atmosphere with the readers. She is also using direct mode of address as this makes the readers feel a connection with the magazine making

them feel a part of it. The left side third image is of another woman. She is not

using direct mode of address because too many people with direct mode of address may become intimidating to the reader especially when the target audience are teenagers. On my contents page I have a male model because it is aimed at girls

and so a male model will appeal to them through the other female models. It gives

more of a variety of characters in my magazine.

Through out my magazine I have used a variety of fonts but using them on each page so they link.

The title fonts like ‘Contents’ (Xpress Heavy SF) are the same

font as the masthead as they represent sections of the

magazine. The title of the double page spread (Playbill) is

different though so it stands out of the magazine. This is

sometimes how some editors make the dps stand out and so I have taken the same idea. A new font intrigues the reader as it is

brand new and does not relate to anything in the magazine.

On my front cover I have written about articles which include music topics such

as an interview with a worldwide famous singer, singing guides and new

albums. All of this information is what a teenager is looking for to interest them. I decided to include guides as teenagers are still growing up with dreams and so are encouraged and inspired to follow

their dreams with encouragement which is why a guide is a good idea. On the contents I have included the same

articles from the front cover to create a link along with articles under topics

such as ‘Pics’, ‘Guides’ and ‘Interviews’ etc. I also have other articles like

‘Studio party’ under ‘pics’ to give a variety of different topics to read for

the readers. The more variety the more appealing to the reader

My music genre is pop but this single magazine is a special edition country magazine. To represent the country genre I have used stereotypical props such as a cowboy hat, classical

guitar and cowboy boots both with the models wearing these clothes and some cartoon images on the

contents page of these props. The articles I have also used are about country singers and guides based

on ‘how to become a country singer’ etc so they all include some sort of country theme.

The layout of my magazine is a stereotypical layout. For a teenage

audience the layout is appealing as it is the same as other typical magazines and so it makes it easy for a teenager

to find specific articles in the magazine using their previous

experience of other magazine layouts. My masthead is at the top of the front

cover and contents page so it is the first thing a reader will see and so tell them straight away what the magazine

is. Plus on the contents page it reminds the reader what magazine they are reading. I have also put an

image of the front cover on the contents page as the reader can relate

the pages and see what the cover looks like (if they want to know)

without having to turn the page. This is a feature that magazines typically do next to their editors note so the reader can see that they are talking

about the magazine.
