History of the Luau•Luaus are traditional Hawaiian celebrations

▫Originally called ‘aha ‘aina, these celebrations became known as luaus about 150 years ago

•The term luau originates from the Hawaiian and other Hawaiian languages, and is the name for the taro leaf▫Taro leaves are combined with others foods,

such as chicken or fish, and then baked in coconut milk

The Modern Luau

•King Kamehameha II introduced the modern luau in 1819

•Luaus were celebrated when a child became of age, when a new canoe was launched, or when warriors returned home after long journeys

•Today, luaus celebrate events such as weddings, graduation, and first birthdays

Celebrating a Luau

•Traditional luau feasts were eaten on the ground and without utensils

•Mats were rolled out and held beautiful centerpieces made of leaves, ferns, and flowers

•Foods were cooked in an underground oven

•Roasted pulled pork cooked in an imu•Poi: Mashed taro root•Laulau: Taro leaf tips and fish or chicken

wrapped in ti leaves•Lomi salmon: A salted fish marinated in

lemon juice, tomatoes, and onions•Plantain bananas, yams, fresh fruits
