Presented on the 5th meeting of the multilateral school partnership Our TRESAURES in Spain (Feb, 2012) LOCAL TREASURES THROUGH OUR STUDENTS' EYES, The Art of Graffiti – It is well known that Zagreb is a very old Central European city. But the city with a tradition of almost one thousand years is also known as a city of art. However, besides numerous museums and galleries, there are literally countless examples of an indeed magnificent work of graffiti in our town. And even though graffiti tend to be misunderstood and treated as a sort of vandalism, we would not completely agree. It is true though that the development of graffiti art took place in art galleries and colleges as well as "on the street" or "underground" through movements that classify artists by their relationship to their social and economic contexts, which is why, in most countries, graffiti art still remains illegal. Nevertheless, in our city, Zagreb, graffiti artists can be found with various materials and techniques and many examples of modern graffiti can be noticed on railway trains and subways thus making Zagreb world famous for its understanding of New York City Subway graffiti as the main source of modern graffiti.
