Interfaces Full-screen video/animated background interfaces with graphical elements overlayed on top. Ferme makes good use of stills with narration and a simple interactive metaphor (2 sides to a story). Black Negative is a really rich interactive experience, probably a bit over the top for us, but they make good use of animation and interaction on the surface of the interface. Patrick Watson (a site I designed :P) is interesting because of the dock that allows for interaction/navigation without stopping the video. Similarly, The Source is a really elegant solution which removes all navigation after a slight delay, and has it fade in on mouse movement.

Portraits Close up, extreme slow motion portraits that feature asynchronous narration. EMA’s is a particularly interesting example of holding a shot too long, where the viewer is almost brought to a point of discomfort. Blindness plays more with a surreal approach.

Typography Modernist, structured, black and white, sans-serif typography with a bit of a rough edge. Exaggerated letterspacing, scale and positioning can be used metaphorically to represent fragmentation and displacement.
Type + Image Examples of typography placed over photography. It can be used very expressively like in the WU LYF example, or more restrained as in Walking Through Light and Replicant. Thin ruled boxes to frame typographic/informational elements can also be used to pull it off the image.
Photography (tone) Photography has a generally muted, soft, pallette, puncuated by small moments of vivid colour and contrast.
Texture Grain and soft noise can be used to add texture. Need to avoid sterotypes of “dust and scratches”, but within dissolves and transitions, it can be used effectively.
Calligraphy Possibly used for UGC and title cards of portraits. Calligraphy could be used to (re)construct the landscape of syria, with strokes being painted triggered by user interaction (leaving a message, etc.)

This is not a start from scratch effort. It’s the continuation of some of the original ideas that grew and took a different direction.
It doesn’t answer all the questions either. It’s an Interface doc, a bit more advanced than mock-ups and a bit more substantial in the sense that it’s both a macro and a micro conceptualization effort. It lays the backbone, which elements we will tweak and adjust as they come. Keep in mind as much as possible all that you can’t imagine yet, the movements, the flow, the animations, the different additional elements of design, the typography, the colours, etc. As well as the global aesthetic outlook. One last thing, in order to keep the read as short as possible, it doesn’t reformulate what has already been set in the previous mock-ups (the loading, certain sound elements, etc.), unless it’s improved or changed (menu, journey module, etc.).
