Kidneys are bean- shaped paired organs which are about four to five inches long and two to three inches wide.

The right kidney is slightly lower due to the presence of liver on the right region of our body.

The kidneys remove urea from the blood through tiny filtering units called nephrons.

The kidneys are the major organs of the urinary system.

Two Major Functions of the Kidneys

1. The kidneys remove liquid waste from the blood in the form of urine.

2. The kidneys also keep a stable balance of salts and other substances in the blood and produce a hormone that aids the formation of blood cells.

Nephritis

It is caused by a damaged glomerulus.

It is an inflammation of some parts of the kidneys, reducing its ability to filter blood.

Dialysis is one way of treating patients with nephritis through removing poisons that accumulate in the blood.

Patients with nephritis develops:

sore throat with fever Loss of appetite Vomiting High blood pressure

Kidney Stones

Also known as “renal calculi”

Kidney stones cause pain and discomfort.

It is a result of continuous build- up of crystallized salts and minerals in the urine.

Urinary Tract Infection (UTI)

It is an inflammation of any part of the urinary tract due to bacterial infection.

A person with UTI has difficulty in urinating.

Hematuria

Is the presence of blood in the urine caused by infection.

Kidney disease is now the number 10 cause of mortality in the Philippines. The main cause of kidney disease seems to be increasing diabetic conditions among Filipinos. About 55% of Filipinos develop kidney disease when they suffer diabetes.

Drink 10-12 glasses of water everyday. Urinate frequently. Eat healthy and balanced diet. Minimize the intake of sweets and salty

food. Exercise regularly.
