CognitivismBy: Julia Worster
The End
What?
Who?
How?
In my classroom?
What is Cognitivism really all about?
Cognitivism =learning theory that attempts to explain what is going
on in the mind while learning.
Humans are logical beings that make
choices that make the most sense
to them.
Learning=active constructive process
The learner processes info. like a computer
Knowledge is built based on personal experiences
Focus is on inner mental activities ◦ Ex: thinking, memory, knowing
Who are some key figures of this theory?
Howard Gardner
Benjamin Bloom
Robert Gagne
Howard Gardner Developed theory of multiple
intelligences 1.)Linguistic (verbal)2.)Logical (mathematical)3.)Spatial (visual)4.)Body (kinesthetic)5.)Musical6.)Interpersonal7.)Intrapersonal8.)Naturalist
Benjamin Bloom Identified levels used to
acquire knowledge
(knowledge, analysis
comprehension,
application, synthesis,
& evaluation)
Robert Gagne
Identified the 9 events of instruction1.) Gain attention of learners
2.) Inform learners of the objective
3.) Stimulate recall of prior learning
4.) Present the stimulus or lesson
5.) Provide learning guidance & instruction
6.) Elicit performance
7.) Provide feedback
8.) Assess performance
9.) Enhance retention & transfer
How would this be implemented? Teachers must use the 9 events of instruction
everyday in the classroom (gain attention of the students, inform students of the objective, etc…)
Create an interactive PowerPoint Quiz, be sure to reward correct answers, & review the main idea after the quiz
More about how this would be implemented?
Teachers must also use Gardner’s theory of multiple intelligences
Teachers should
adjust assessment
methods to accommodate
the wide variety of
students learning styles
more accurately
How does this impact your teaching style and philosophy of education?
In my classroom,
I will incorporate many
elements so that all of
my students have the same
opportunity to learn & are
in an environment where
they can successfully
do so…
More about how this impacts your teaching style and philosophy of education
Use power point presentations
Use games, skits, & songs to help students grasp concepts
Ask different levels of questions
Use graphs/charts to convey information
Gain & keep the attention of my class
