Buddhism 1. Buddhism- Buddhism was started by Siddhartha Gautama 2. Siddhartha Gautama was born into a noble family as a prince, according to the legend, when he was a

baby he exhibited marks of a great man. The prophecy indicated that if he stayed at home he would rule the world, but if he chose to leave he would become a spiritual leader.

3. When he was twenty-nine he traveled out of his palace four times first he saw an old man, a sick man and then a corpse. He then realized that all humans go through old age sickness and death.

4. When he realized this he left his palace to find religious truth and an end to suffering 5. Siddhartha wandered through the forests of India for six years seeking enlightenment 6. He laid out four noble truths: 1st-everything in life is suffering and sorrow 2nd- the cause of all suffering is people’s selfish desire for temporary pleasures of this world 3rd- the way to end all suffering is to end all desires 4th- the way to overcome suck desires and attain

enlightenment is to follow the Eightfold Path, which is called the Middle Way between desires and self denial.

By following the eightfold path any one could reach the state of nirvana which was the release of selfishness and pain

Buddha’s traditions included many ideas of the Hindu traditions but however differed sharply from that tradition.

Hinduism Hinduism is a collection of religious beliefs that developed slowly over

a period of time. Some aspects of the religion can be traced back to ancient times.

Hinduism unlike other religions can not be traced back to one founder with one single set of ideas.

Hindus share a common world view. They see religion as a way of liberating the soul from illusions, disappointments, and mistakes of everyday existence

Hindus believed in the law of “Karma” –good or bad deeds- follows them from one re incarnation to another. Reincarnation is when an individual soul or spirit is born again and again until moksha is achieved. Moksha is the state of understanding all things

Karma influences specific life circumstances, such as the caste one is born into, ones state of health, wealth, poverty and so on.

Hindus believed in Brahman the creator; Vishnu, the protector; and Shiva the destroyer.

India had great literary, art ,science and mathematic changesOne of their greatest writings might just be Kalidasa which tells the

story of a beautiful girl who falls in love with and marries a middle-aged king.

In southern India they had writing academies. More than 2,000 Tamil poems still exist today.

Indian Mathematics was among the most advanced in the world. Modern numerals Zero and the decimal system were invented in India. The value of pie was also invented in India.

A man named Aryabhata calculated pi out to four decimal spots. He also calculated the length of the solar year to 365.3586805
