Dear Parents and Friends of St Joseph’s,

St Joseph’s was a great place to be last week. Our school community and spirit shone

so brightly and it was one of those weeks where you were so thankful for the great gift

of being at this wonderful school.

Year 4 along with Mrs Bielby and Mrs Geddes hosted a beautiful Mother’s Day Mass

and our mums, nans, aunties and carers were honoured and celebrated with a

wonderful morning tea after this beautiful celebration. I hope that you all got to have a

special day on Sunday for Mother’s Day. It is always fantastic to see so much support

for these special events held at school and it means so much to your children that you

are able to come and be a part of these special days.

NAPLAN: This week our Year 3 and 5 students sat their NAPLAN assessments. There has been

much discussion in the press about NAPLAN over the past few weeks, and Mr

Mowbray touched on it in last week’s newsletter. The teachers have spent much time

in assisting the children in preparing for these assessments and I am sure that our

children would have done the very best that they can do.

High Tea for Jacqui Burgess:

We also celebrated a very special birthday for our beautiful Jacqui Burgess in the office. Jacqui has been involved in our school as a parent, volunteer and employee (as Library Assistant then to the School Office Manager), for over 30 years and she is a very special part of our school. The staff surprised Jacqui with a High Tea for her birthday and invited many past teachers to come and share in Jacqui’s special celebration. Jacqui sent a beautiful email of thanks to the staff which shows just how special her day was.

“I feel so humbled by the incredible generosity of each and every one of you. Without doubt, your joyous celebration of

my birthday would have been one of the best occasions ever in my life!

The high tea was absolutely amazing, more so in the fact that it was happening all around me and I was absolutely

oblivious.

Delicious and delectable goodies to eat, beautiful china, the guests - everything was perfect. I was also very touched

that the Retreads were able to join in the celebrations as they have been part of my Joey's Taree journey since 1979.”

Kevin and Miss B Hit the Road: Many of you would be aware of Kevin and our Making Jesus Real Quest led by our REC Natasha Brotherton. Last week

Natasha was invited to present at the National Making Jesus Real Conference in a very wet Hobart. Kevin was a hit and

Natasha shared how St Joseph’s is Making Jesus Real with so many schools from around the country. Congratulations to

Natasha on her vision and commitment to Making Jesus Real.

Winter Uniform:

With the weather starting to cool down we will begin to move into winter uniform from next week. If we do get a hot day students can wear summer uniform until the 25th of May. All students are expected in full winter uniform, including school tie, which you can get from the office, from Monday the 28th of May.

RE News:

What a fortnight!

Thank you to Year 4, Mrs Bielby and Mrs Geddes for preparing a beautiful Mother’s Day Mass. It was

great to have so many people come to our school to share in a Mass that celebrates women and the work

they do for our children.

Dates to remember:

Week 4: Friday 25th May – Sorry Day Ceremony

Week 6: Thursday 7th June – Pentecost Mass

Week 7: Tuesday 12th June – Year 3 and 5 go to Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic Church for Mass

Week 9: Friday 29th June – NAIDOC DAY

Sacramental Program

The first and second Confirmation sessions will run in the school hall on Thursday 31st May from 3:45-

4:45pm.

Making Jesus Real

This fortnight the children are being reminded to be kind just because they can. It is important to be a

Happy Helper rather than a Whingy Whiner.

You will know if you are a Whingy Whiner is you say:

It’s my turn!

What’s in it for me?

You are a Happy Helper if you say:

Can I help you out with that?

You look nice today?

Or simply help out your family members or teachers when you notice they need some help.

Google: MJR with Kevin 16 or subscribe to Faith7 on You Tube to view the latest episode.

Wishing you a beautiful week!

Natasha Brotherton – Religious Education Coordinator.

Pupil Free Days: This term we have a whole staff training in a total new school administration system called ‘Compass’. Compass goes live on Tuesday 29 May. The whole staff will be trained in the use of Compass on a pupil free day on May 18. That’s the

end of week 3 this term. We will have another pupil free day on July 23, the first day of Term 3. The schools of the Diocese will work together in Newcastle on that day with the University of Newcastle. The staff will also participate in a retreat on September 14, also a pupil free day. At this stage we haven’t booked the one other pupil free day but will let you know as early in the year as possible.

Compass is Coming Soon: This Friday is a Pupil Free Day for our staff to train on the new user platform Compass for our computer system. If you

have a child at St Clare’s you will already be aware of Compass and how it can be used for communication with parents,

reports, permission notes, absence notes and much more. Keep an eye out in the newsletter for more information over

the next few weeks. Compass will go live on the 29th of May.

School Photos Update: As many of you are aware we have had to change the photo date for Years 5 and 6 due to a number of our Year 6

students attending sporting commitments on the 31st of May. I am sure that you can understand how important it is to

us that as many of our Year 6 students are in their Year 6 photos. The new photo date for Years 5 and 6 is now Friday

the 15th of June.

I am aware that we will have moved into winter uniform, however, on this day we ask that all Year 5 and 6 students and

any siblings of Year 5 and 6 students who have not had their sibling photos please wear their summer uniform on this

day. This is to ensure consistency of uniform in the 2018 school photos.

There will also be a delay to the delivery of photos due to the split photo date. The photographer will be have

the photos to us by Week 1 of Term 3.

Welcome Mia:

This week we welcomed Mia Coghill to Year 3. It is always so lovely to see how welcoming our children are and how

they love to go out of their way to be a friend to others.

School Communication:

Apart from our newsletters, St. Joseph’s uses a variety of online methods to provide parents with information about the school. The school uses the following forms of digital communication:

- School Website http://www.tareesj.catholic.edu.au/ - Skoolbag App (download app from iTunes or Google Play. Search for St. Joseph’s Primary Taree Skoolbag) - Facebook – St. Joseph’s Taree

Enrolments: For me to look back over each term at Joeys there is so much to be proud of. In the enrolment ad below we read five great reasons to have your children at our wonderful school. If you haven’t submitted enrolment forms for 2019 as yet please come in and get one. Please also encourage anyone you know who has a child starting school next year to consider Joeys. I regularly hear from parents how much they love this school. People also tell me they hear negative things about our school. I daily witness the commitment of our staff and the high quality education here at our school. I’d love my kids to come here. I need you parents to be our best advertisement! I’m always happy to speak with families and answer any questions about our educational offering.

Sport Information:

School Athletics Carnival: Next week on Thursday 24th May we will be holding our School Athletics Carnival for students who are turning 8 this

year. Events will start at 9.30, but we are unable to give exact times for events. The program for the day will be on

Facebook.

Winter Sports Trials – Polding Netball, Hockey, Rugby League, Basketball:

Congratulations to all our students who travelled to Tamworth and represented our Dio in

the Polding trials. By all reports our students played well and tried hard demonstrating great

sportsmanship. We had some students make the Possible/Probable selection process, which

was a great achievement.

A huge congratulations to Hannah Chicken who was selected in the Polding Netball team.

Polding Basketball….Hannah is heading off on a road trip to Broken Hill (14hrs away) at the end of May. She has been

successful in obtaining a position on the Polding Basketball team. The competition runs for 4 days which includes a

training day. Hannah has some friends that she plays with in the local Taree competition, they are all vying to make the

NSW team. We wish Hannah all the best in her sporting adventures.

Diocesan Cross Country:

Congratulations to all the students that travelled to Walka Waterworks Maitland for the Diocesan Cross Country last

week. Every single person ran extremely well and represented our school with great pride. The course was quite

challenging, as it was a true cross-country course with hills, dirt roads and rocks to conquer. Most age groups had at

least 100 competitors, which meant the races were hotly contested.

Whilst we did not have any of our students place in the top 8, we still had a lot of students come in the first half of the

field in each race which was a great achievement in itself.

A special mention to Leah Boughton who unfortunately was tripped over at the start of the race and had a heavy fall on

the dirt road. She was unable to compete but was very mature in the way she dealt with this disappointment.

Congratulations to the following students:

Girls - Shakeiah Brown-Saunders, Miller Morrissey, Kalani Collis, Arabella Roohan, Coco

Solomon, Shae-Lee Lacy, Jahzara Neal, Jannarlia Dumas, Makaia Bungie, Leah Boughton,

Luca McCann.

Boys – Joshua Thomson, Logan Clarke, Nate Shutes, Lucca Boyling, Mackye Bron, James

Rodgers, Zane Shutes, Macklin Green, Bailey Osmond Dreyer.

40km/h School Zone & Collection of Children: The State Government has reminded motorists to slow down in school zones. Particularly in afternoons, I get really nervous about some drivers who aren’t as diligent as they need to be as we move 400 children out of the school simultaneously. Could we also remind you that if you are collecting children this must happen on the blue seats. That way we can ensure the safety of your children.

Keep our children safe in and around our car park

Sadly we have witnessed a number of students crossing the road from parked cars on their own. This is very dangerous

because of the amount of traffic. Please hold your child’s hand and escort them to and from the school gate so we can

keep all children safe.

The disabled parking area is only for those with a visible disabled sticker. Cars parked illegally run the risk of a fine. This

is not a drop off zone.

When leaving the car park it is important that you give way to buses and cars entering the second driveway to the

teachers’ car park.

Please only use the parent car park. The teacher’s car park and bus zone is not available for parent

parking or student drop off.

We are a school zone and 40 hour speed limits must be observed.

Mark Mowbray will be away for the next four weeks as he travels overseas to celebrate his 30th wedding anniversary

with his wife Marina and their children. I am sure that you will join me in wishing both him and Marina all the best.

We are so truly blessed to be a part of the St Joseph’s community it really is a great place to be. Our focus for the next

two weeks is to be givers not takers, I hope that our children are all able to give to others, even it if is a smile and some

kind words. I hope that you have a wonderful two weeks
