Cover Letter• I am writing to apply for the position of long-term substitute for physical education at Apple Glen Elementary School

that I saw on the Bentonville Public School website.

This statement lets my reader know exactly what position I am applying for.

• You will see through my enclosed resume that my education, work experience, and leadership roles have prepared me for this position.

This lets my reader know that I have enclosed a resume where they can further view how my talents have equipped me for the job.

• Through my internship at Tyson Elementary in Springdale, being a mentor to a 5 year old autistic child at Building Bridges- Sugar Creek in Bentonville, and working with various elementary schools throughout Fayetteville with the University of Arkansas, I have gained the proper work experience to prepare me for this job.

This statement directly lets my reader know that I have experience in the skills related to the job and a general view of those skills.

Domain A: Organizing Content Knowledge for Student Learning

• A1:becoming familiar with relevant aspects of students’ background knowledge and experiences.

-I spoke with my students daily on their activities outside the classroom. I also talked to them about their cultures and showed interest in their customs. I spoke with my mentor about their home situation to get a better feel for where the girls were coming from.

• A2:articulating clear learning goals that are appropriate for the students.-Each morning I wrote on a large calendar, which is posted next to the lock room door, what we will be doing

that day. Before class starts the students are in their “rows” in the gym. I then tell them the activity we will be doing and the goal of the activity. When we did an activity called Scooter Spelling, I informed the girls that the goal of this activity was to get their team to the other end of the gym only using 2 scooters and 2 hula-hoops and correctly spell the correct answer to the question asked using the football terminology we had learned.

• A3:demonstrating an understanding of the connections between the content that was learned previously, the current content, and the content that remains to be learned in the future.

-As I was getting ready to start a softball lesson with my students I had to figure out what they already knew, what I wanted to teach them, and then what content still would remain to be learned in the future. I knew the girls had all thrown a softball ball before but some had never swung a bat or played the game. So, for my lesson I taught them how to bat properly, after reviewing how to throw. Then I knew for my future lesson that I would be teaching them how to play the game, the rules, and putting it all together.

• A4:creating or selecting teaching methods, learning activities, and instructional materials or other resources that are appropriate for the students and that are aligned with the goals of the lesson.

-One thing I did that they really seemed to enjoy was I used balloons to start my lesson on volleyball. The goal of my lesson was for the girls to get the feel of the proper stance and form for passing and setting a ball. With their skill level I knew it would be easier for them to start with a balloon as opposed to a regular volleyball.

• A5: creating or selecting evaluation strategies that are appropriate for the students and that are aligned with the goals of the lesson.

-For the most part I did mental evaluations. However, when I was teaching a specific skill such as batting, I used an evaluation rubric. If I could tell a girl’s stance was incorrect or her swing was incorrect I would immediately fix it.

• B1:creating a climate that promotes fairness.-One way I promote fairness is when two teams are playing a game, for example

kickball, I have one person from each team “rock, paper, scissors” for what team will kick first. Another way I have done this with my students is if some students are coming in late due to various things such as testing, I will have other students help them out by telling them what is going on when they walk in the gym.

• B2:establishing and maintaining rapport with students. -I always try to call my students by name. I think it is very important to be personable

with you students and directly call them by name. Not only do I know all of my students names but I will talk to them about their weekend/night and get to know more about their personal life.

• B3:communicating challenging learning expectations to each student.-I realize that every student is at a different physical level but you still need to give a

common expectation to all students. I make sure to tell my students the goal of the activity and my expectations for them.

• B4:establishing and maintaining consistent standards of classroom behavior.

-Classroom rules are posted in the locker room. If the students get off track and are not using proper classroom behavior I will give them reinforcement.

• B5:making the physical environment as safe and conducive to learning as possible.

- In a physical education setting there are several pieces of equipment that can quickly become dangerous. The gym floor should only have equipment on it that is going to be used for the activity at the time. I always set up equipment before the students arrive in the gym.

Domain C: Teaching for Student Learning

• C1:making learning goals and instructional procedures clear to students.-At the beginning of each lesson I will write the goal for the lesson on the

board and I will explain the goal to the students.

• C2:making content comprehensible to students. -Some students are learning the content for the first time and others it is

merely a review. The best way for me to know if the content has been made comprehensible to the students is not only asking them questions and having them answer, but by observing how they do a skill/activity.

• C3:encouraging students to extend their thinking. - After lessons I will ask questions to help extend students thinking; such as “If

I throw the football to my receiver but it is caught by the other team, what is this called?” I also do many cooperative game activities in order to get my students critically thinking.

Pathwise Domain C…• C4:monitoring students’ understanding of content through a variety

of means, providing feedback to students to assist learning, and adjusting learning activities as the situation demands.

-Students were doing an activity where they had to correctly spell football terminology while answering a question. For example, I would ask the students, “who catches the ball?” The students would then go spell out receiver. I would check to make sure they students answered the question correctly and spelled it correctly.

• C5: using instructional time effectively. -I try to maximize my activity time but sometimes further instruction

needs to be given. I will always spend about 3 minutes at the beginning of the class explaining to the students what the goal and expectations are and then how to play the warm up game. I then go into our activity for the day (including a demonstration) and then a review of questions (closure) at the end of class.

Domain D: Professionalism

• D1:reflecting on the extent to which the learning goals were met.

-After each class I would determine if I thought the learning goals were met or not. If they were not, I then decided if that was because of my efforts, the students, or a combination.

• D2:demonstrating a sense of efficacy.- I went above and beyond to make this happen everyday. In my

mind a students success is not always curriculum based, but overall perspective and attitude based. If I could see that I was making a difference in a child’s life or if I had taught a child a new skill they did not already know then I had met my goal.

• D3:building professional relationships with colleagues to share teaching insights and to coordinate learning activities for students.

-On the first day of being at Southwest Junior High, after meeting with my mentor teacher, I introduced myself to the principal, vice-principal, secretaries, other coaches, teachers, etc. After doing that I felt more comfortable talking with them and asking for advice.

• D4:communicating with parents or guardians about student learning.

-At the beginning of the semester we sent out a newsletter to the parents informing them of our physical education classroom and how things would work. We explained uniforms, expectations, grading scale, parent-teacher conferences, etc.
