World Food Day helps raise people’s awareness of problems in food supply and distribution.
Foundation of FAO
FAO was founded in 1943 at Hot Springs (USA) during the UN Conference on Food and Agriculture, and it was formally instituted during the First Session of the FAO Conference, held in Quebec, Canada, in 1945
What is FAO?
Achieving food security for all is at the heart of FAO's efforts – to make sure people have regular access to enough high-quality food to lead active, healthy lives. Our three main goals are: the eradication of hunger, food insecurity and malnutrition; the elimination of poverty and the driving forward of economic and social progress for all; and, the sustainable management and utilization of natural resources, including land, water, air, climate and genetic resources for the benefit of present and future generations.
DEFINITION of 'Food And Agriculture Organization - FAO'
A United Nations agency that works on international efforts to defeat hunger by helping developing countries modernize and improve agriculture, forestry and fisheries practices. Serving both developed and developing countries, the Food and Agriculture Organization also aims to be a neutral forum where nations can negotiate agreements and debate policy.
History of FAO
CREATION OF FAO On 16 October 1945, 42 countries
acted in Quebec, Canada, to create the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). In doing so they took another important step forward in man's perpetual struggle against hunger and malnutrition.
For through the establishment of FAO they provided themselves, and the many other nations that were to enter the Organization, with a mechanism through which its Member Countries could deal with a set of problems that are of major concern to all countries and all people.

Origin
ESTABLISHMENT World Food Day (WFD) was
established by FAO's Member Countries at the Organization's 20th General Conference in November 1979. The Hungarian Delegation, led by the former Hungarian Minister of Agriculture and Food Dr. Pál Romány, played an active role at the 20th Session of the FAO Conference and suggested the idea of celebrating the WFD worldwide. It has since been observed every year in more than 150 countries, raising awareness of the issues behind poverty and hunger

Achievements and Awards by FAO
In 2013, 38 countries had already been recognized for reducing by half the proportion of people who suffer from hunger by 2015, in keeping with the MDG1 target. 18 of these countries were awarded for reaching both MDG 1 and the more stringent goal set by the 1996 World Food Summit (WFS) that is of reducing by half the absolute number of undernourished people.
Achievements and Awards by FAO Contd
In November 2014, FAO awarded Ethiopia, Gabon, the Gambia, Iran, Kiribati, Malaysia, Mauritania, Mauritius, Mexico and the Philippines for reaching the MDG-1 target; and Brazil, Cameroon and Uruguay for meeting the World Food Summit goal.
In 2014, the list of country achievements grew, as governments continued to fulfill their pledge to eradicate hunger globally. In June, FAO recognized China and Morocco for having met the MDG-1 hunger target and Chile for having met the more ambitious World Food Summit goal. Chile was already among the 20 countries that received the MDG-1 award in 2013.
Achievements and Awards by FAO Contd
On 7 June 2015, FAO recognizes the following countries for reaching the Millennium Development Goal 1 (MDG1) target: Angola, Bolivia, China, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Gabon, Laos, Mali, Mozambique, Myanmar, Nepal, Solomon Islands, Suriname and Uzbekistan.
Hunger Situation In World
Throughout the world, 805 million people face chronic hunger on a day-to-day basis, with vulnerable populations bearing the brunt of this inequity.
60% of those suffering hunger are women. Approximately 5 million children under the age of 5 die of
malnutrition-related causes each year. 4 in 10 children in poor countries suffer malnutrition that
leads to the deterioration of their bodies and negatively impacting their brains.
Theme for 2015
The theme of the World Food Day 2015 will be “Social protection and Agriculture."
Aims of “Social protection and Agriculture”,
The topic for 2015 will be “Social protection and Agriculture”, which aims to underline the role social protection plays in reducing chronic food insecurity and poverty by ensuring direct access to food or the means to buy food. Social protection is, moreover, a viable alternative for stimulating agricultural production and local economic activity.
FAO has stated, agricultural production must increase by 60% globally to meet the food demand that will be required to feed the 9.2 billion people who will inhabit our planet in 2050.
On 16 October, leading figures in the global fight against
hunger gathered at the Milan Expo to celebrate World Food Day, marking the 70th anniversary of the foundation of FAO with appeals to speed up efforts to eradicate hunger and improve the way food is produced and consumed.
Jose Graziano da Silva, Director General | FAO
“According to FAO, we have more than enough food produced nowadays to avoid hunger. People are hungry today because they don't have access to food ... because they cannot pay for the food or they cannot produce it any more as we did in the past.”
José Graziano da Silva re-elected FAO Director-General
6 June 2015, Rome - Incumbent FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva was today re-elected to a second term in the Organization's top post with the highest number of votes ever in the history of the Organization.
In ballot by FAO member countries today, Graziano da Silva received a total of 177 out of 182 votes cast.
FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva Message
FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva thanked the world's farmers, fishers, forest workers and other food and agriculture workers for their contribution to the "amazing achievement" of increasing sustenance from all even as the world population tripled since 1945.
With around 800 million people still suffering from undernutrition, two big challenges lie ahead, he told assembled dignitaries, including the President of Italy, the President of Slovenia Borut Pahor, and Queen Letizia of Spain, who is FAO's special ambassador for nutrition.
"First, we must quickly translate increases in food availability into better nutrition for all. Second, we must accelerate the shift of food production and consumption towards truly sustainable systems," Graziano said.
"Good nutrition is one of the best sources of economic growth and it contributes to peace and stability," he added
FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva Message
Referring to this year's World Food Day theme ‘Social protection and agriculture - breaking the cycle of rural poverty', he noted that "production and economic growth alone do not solve the problem, if the hungry remain excluded. India, Brazil and Ethiopia and other countries show us that increasing the power of the very poor to buy food offers an affordable key to hunger eradication."
FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva Message
"Industrialized countries did the same to end widespread hunger after World War II," he noted. "The food stamps programme in the U.S. is one of the best examples."
Social protection allows the hungry to "become empowered to escape hunger through their own efforts, thus lead dignified and productive lives," he added.
United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon On World Food Day, United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-
moon is underlining that “hunger is more than a lack of food—it is a terrible injustice,” while reaffirming the global community’s commitment to work together “to end hunger in our lifetime
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said in his address. "We are here to build a global movement to end hunger. We have to forge new partnerships and create better ways of working."
The UN Secretary-General emphasized the scale of food waste and loss, estimated as around a third of all the food produced globally. "People everywhere know that waste is a disgrace," he said.
Kanayo F. Nwanze, president of the U.N. international agriculture development fund IFAD
"The difference is that the Milan Charter is rallying ordinary people," Kanayo F. Nwanze, president of the U.N. international agriculture development fund IFAD, told The Associated Press. "It gives ordinary people a chance to have a voice and to recognize the issues."
What is social protection?
Any policy or program designed to reduce poverty and vulnerability by promoting efficient labour markets, diminishing people's exposure to risks, and enhancing their capacity to manage economic and social risks, such as unemployment, exclusion, sickness, disability and old age. Today about 75% of the 795 million undernourished people in the world live in rural areas. Effective social protection programmes in such areas, where agriculture plays a vital role, include cash transfers, vouchers, insurances and in-kind contributions.
Why is social protection key to ending hunger and poverty?
Providing people with nutritious food is not enough. Without social protection, poor communities are at constant risk of hunger and poverty, especially when faced with a crisis or shock of any nature. By incorporating social protection programmes into national development strategies and policies, governments can provide greater income stability and ability to manage risk, thus contributing to reducing poverty and food insecurity in the longer-term. In fact social protection is high on the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development and considered an important means to achieving the Goal of ending poverty within the next 15 years. It is also at the heart of the Zero Hunger Challenge promoted by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.
Role of Women In Food Security
Women are the cornerstone of the rural economy, especially in the developing world. They bear the greatest responsibility for food production, producing more than half of all food in the world and growing 80-90% of the food in sub-Saharan Africa.
Yet despite this, women are all too often left out of consultations that directly impact their lives, such as decisions on policies, development interventions or education programmes. Women face both economic and social restraints.
"Women farmers play a crucial part in ending hunger," says Bettina Luescher, a communications officer for the World Food Programme in Geneva. "If women farmers had the same access to loans, land, seed and selling their harvests on the markets, we think we could lift some 100 to 150 million people out of hunger. Isn't that an amazing number?"
What Can You DO? Stop food waste
Food waste negatively impacts the global economy. When deciding on food, select reasonable portions to help limit the amount of waste. Always remember that there are others whose lives could be saved by a morsel of food.
What Can You DO?Buy local.
Local farming helps reduce the carbon footprint contributing to better environmental conditions. Climate change has impeded the ability of farmers in some regions of the world to grow staple crops due to changing environmental factors. Help curb this by supporting local farmers in your community.
What Can You DO?Support sustainable initiatives.
Whether in your home, in your community, or on a global scale, support initiatives that advocate sustainable solutions to the food crisis.
What Can You DO?Support businesses and organizations that give
back to the community.
Seek out businesses and organizations that provide services to those suffering hunger domestically and abroad.
What Can You DO?Speak out.
Use your voice and your online presence to speak out on issues of food inequality. Help bring awareness to the #ZeroHunger campaign by disseminating and sharing information that promote better food practices.
Minister for National Food Security and Research (NFS&R) Sikandar Hayat Khan Bosan Message on World Food Day 16th Oct 2015
Speaking on the occasion as the chief guest, Minister for National Food Security and Research (NFS&R) Sikandar Hayat Khan Bosan said this year agriculture at the global level is facing some new challenges - the challenges that it has never encountered in the past. The stocks of food grains are highest in the history of mankind, but their prices have touched the rock bottom. This might be good news for the consumers’ society but the producers are finding it difficult to even recover their cost of production, he added.
Federal Minister AgriculturePakistan
The minister said this year, the theme of the World Food Day is social protection and agriculture; breaking the cycle of rural poverty. In the context of the prevalent situation of agriculture, it seems to be quite an appropriate theme, because the farmers need social protection more, now, than it ever needed. Poverty is a major problem of our economy and major hurdle to the development. This is also a major cause of unrest in the society, he underlined.
