Innovation ecosystem in tanzania

Buni Hub
Tanzania innovation ecosystem is composed two main part the policy makers (e.g Ministries, COSTECH)
and grassroots innovation (e.g Innovation Spaces, Incubators)
initiatives.
✖ The Role of COSTECH: COSTECH role is to nurture these grassroots innovation initiatives by linking them to the opportunity that are coming from the central government and donor funds.
✖ COSTECH is also housing three of these initiatives.

Buni HubBuni hub is an innovation space inside COSTECH which provides a platform for youths to nurture the ideas and form sustainable early stage businesses through training and mentoring programs.
DTBiDTBi stands for Dar es Salaam Teknohama Business Incubator. This is an incubator housed at COSTECH which offers pre and post incubation services for Tanzania ICT startups.
TANZICT ProjectIt is bilateral project between the government of Tanzania and Finland which focusing on building knowledge societies. TANZICT projects funds Buni Hub and support Living Labs all over Tanzania.
GRASSROOTS INNOVATION INITIATIVES TANZANIA✖ Innovation Spaces: They nurture early stage ideas by offering
mentoring opportunities and link them to potential funders, partners and sponsors e.g Buni Hub & Niwezeshe Lab they are at the bottom of the pyramid they equip them with skills and knowledge.
✖ Accelerators: They help companies to accelerate their growth by offering desirable services to them, they also do co-creation and offer working space e.g KINU
✖ Living Labs: Social revolution initiatives that uses entrepreneurship and ICT to empower societies at the grassroot level e.g Rlabs Iringa & Elimu Lab Sengerema
✖ Incubators: They help innovative and investable companies to grow and scale very fast by giving them the right strategies.
✖ Maker Spaces: Promoting culture of making among youths. e.g STIC Lab Kitunda & AISE Arusha
✖ Entrepreneurship Centers: They are located in the Universities with the aim of encouraging students to take part in entrepreneurship and forming ventures. e.g UDEC at UDSM

✖ Buni Hub: Number of new startups that receive funds from TANZICT project are coming from the hub and they have successfully implemented the first e-waste 3D printer in East Africa just recently.
✖ Buni Hub: 12 projects have come from their internship programme and 7 companies are being housed at the hub with 900 registered hub users. The hub has recently established a mini fabrication laboratory.
✖ Living Labs: The network of Living Labs in rural Tanzania has helped to empower people through social revolution by training them on entrepreneurship.
✖ Incubators: DTBi has enabled companies to grow very fast one of the major success story is a company called MaxCom Africa one of the largest companies that offers mobile consumer services throughout the country.

1. Stage 1: Nurturing ideas and helping people to build their ideas by offering technical and business assistance.
2. Stage 2: After forming early stage businesses helping the to grow fast by accelerating their businesses.
3. Stage 3: Incubating their ideas by helping them to get potential partners, investors and customers of their products.
NumbersCurrently there are 3 innovation spaces in Dar es Salaam and
6 active living labs. 1 of the 3 innovation spaces offers
acceleration programme. It is difficult to say the exact number
of incubators and entrepreneurship centers since college and
universities tend to offer their own incubation services, the
most active ones are DTBi, SIDO incubator and Incubators at
the University of Dar es Salaam. 2 new innovation spaces
have been formed one in Tumaini (Iringa) University and the
other in Zanzibar Urban (Stone Town) in which the space is
owned by the State government of Zanzibar and technical
support is coming from TANZICT Project. Current there is talks
to establish one in Mbeya. We have 2 makerspace Buni Mini
FabLab and STIC Lab Kitunda.
