2. STANDARDS: SS2H1 The student will read about and describe the lives of historical figures in Georgia history. a. Identify the contributions made by these historic figures: James Oglethorpe, Tomochichi, and Mary Musgrove (founding of Georgia); Sequoyah (development of a Cherokee alphabet); Jackie Robinson (sports); Martin Luther King, Jr. (civil rights); Jimmy Carter (leadership and human rights). b. Describe how everyday life of these historical figures is similar to and different from everyday life in the present (food, clothing, homes, transportation, communication, recreation, rights, and freedoms). Use this arrow when your ready to go to the next slide: 3. OVERVIEW In this project, you will learn about four famous Americans from Georgia and the contributions that they made to Georgia during their lifetime. You will learn about the challenges they faced and eventually overcame. You will see how their lives were different from yours. Once you have learned about these individuals, you will prepare to give them the award that they deserve for all of their accomplishments. You will have to give reasoning for why these people deserve to receive awards. 4. INTRODUCTION In the history of Georgia, there have been many people that have done great things for our state. In just a short while, there will be an award ceremony to honor the lives of these people. At this ceremony, each person will receive a Lifetime Achievement Award to thank them for all of the great things that they have done. The award ceremony is very special, and only a few people are invited. You will be at the award ceremony, but you have a job to do! 5. TASK: You have just been hired to give the Lifetime Achievement Award at a very special presentation for a famous person that was from Georgia. Your first job is to learn about these four Americans: *Jackie Robinson *Sequoyah *Martin Luther King Jr. *Jimmy Carter 6. CHECK OUT THIS VIDEO ON JACKIE ROBINSON 7. WHEN YOU VIEW THIS PREZI, USE IT TO HELP YOU COMPLETE YOUR WORKSHEET. THE DIRECTIONS ARE IN THE PREZI Historical Figures of Georgia 11. PROCESS Now, you must prepare to give these individuals from Georgia an award for everything they accomplished during their lifetime. Read your directions carefully. 1. Each person in the group must pick one person to give an award to. 2. Based on everything you have learned, prepare a speech to give your person an award. You may do additional research on the computer to learn more about your person to prepare for your speech. In your speech, make sure you tell everyone why the person deserves the award. It is called the Lifetime Achievement Award. 3. When your speech is ready, you need to design your certificate. On the certificate, make sure you put the name of the award, and the name of the person receiving the award. You may design the rest of the award any way that you like. 4. Take turns sharing your speeches with your group members. 12. PROCESS Now, you will learn how to use google docs. There is an assignment for you to complete on google docs. You will debate about which American deserves the award the most. Here is an example of what the debate will look like when you are finished. Historical Figures Debate 13. CONCLUSION Congratulations! You have prepared to give an award to a very deserving person. Jackie Robinson, Sequoyah, Martin Luther King Jr., and Jimmy Carter are very important historical figures in Georgia History. Now that you have completed this assignment, there are some extra activities on the next slide for you to complete. 14. EXTENSION ACTIVITIES Watch the Movie 42. We will discuss how things were different during that time and why it was such a big deal for Jackie to play baseball with white people. Write a newspaper article on any one of the historical figures that you have learned about. Pretend you are going to interview one of these figures. What kinds of questions would you ask them? How do you think they would respond? Create a poster of the information you have learned about the famous historical figures from Georgia. Create your own powerpoint about these important people from Georgia. 15.
