Hand-foot-and-mouth disease

is a mild, but highly contagious viral infection common in young children. HFMD occurs mainly in children under 10 years old but can also occur in adults. Children are more likely to be at risk for infection and illness because they are less likely than adults to have antibodies to protect them.

CauseHFMD is caused by Enterovirus 71 (EV-71)

. This group of viruses includes polioviruses, coxsackieviruses, echoviruses, and enteroviruses.

The virus is most often spread by persons with unwashed, virus-contaminated hands and by contact with virus-contaminated surfaces.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMSFEVER

Sore throat

The disease usually begins with a fever,A fever of 38-39°C may be present for 24-48 hours, poor appetite, malaise (feeling vaguely unwell), and often with a sore throat

One or two days after fever onset, painful sores usually develop in the mouth. They begin as small red spots that blister and then often become ulcers. The sores are usually located on the tongue, gums, and inside of the cheeks.

A non-itchy skin rash develops over 1–2 days. The rash has flat or raised red spots, sometimes with blisters. The rash is usually located on the palms of the hands and soles of the feet; it may also appear on the buttocks and/or genitalia.

A person with HFMD may have only the rash or only the mouth sores.

-Infected persons are most contagious during the first week of the illness.

- The viruses that cause HFMD can remain in the body for weeks after a patient's symptoms have gone away. This means that the infected student can still pass the infection to other people even though he/she appears well..

- HFMD is not transmitted to or from pets or other animals.

- Students who get HFMD need to absent the school and submit medical certificate. Once they’re completely heal, they need to show medical certificate which mention that they’re fit for school

Contagious Period

Treatment and Medical ManagementThere is no specific treatment for HFMD.

Symptoms can be treated to provide relief from pain from mouth sores and from fever and aches.

Fluid intake should be enough to prevent dehydration (lack of body fluids). If moderate-to-severe dehydration develops, it can be treated medically by giving fluids through the veins.

Prevention Washing hands

frequently and correctly and especially after changing diapers and after using the toilet , before preparing food and eating and after playing

Cleaning dirty surfaces and soiled items, including toys, first with soap and water and then, disinfecting them

• Isolate contagious or suspected students:If you notice any of the signs and symptoms above, please sent the student to clinic.

•If there are at least 2 students who get HFMD in one class room, will close and clean that section and common area where that student have used together with other

4 Check to ensure the student is fit to school:

Check for fever (to take temperature).

Check for blisters on hands and arms.

Check for mouth ulcers.

Check for blisters on soles of feet, legs and/ or buttocks
