2. What is Stakeholder theory? Stakeholder theory attempts to define the relationship between owners and stakeholders by observing the management practices implemented for the pursuit of articulated organizational goals. 3. A stakeholder in an organization is any group or individual who can affect or is affected by the achievement of the organizations objectives. (Freeman, 1984) A relationship between the firm and stakeholders exists either by the dependency of the firm upon stakeholders for its survival or that stakeholders depend upon the firm to protect its rights and/or achieve its interests. (Mitchell, Agle, Wood, 1997, p. 862) Square Peg in a Round Hole? 4. How does stakeholder theory work as a framework for educational research? Stakeholder theorists, in the past, have been training managers and executives in a capitalistic business environment or teachers at business schools. However, the key word found embedded in the theory is relationships. 5. The Process Used for a Successful Transition Carefully examined the theoretical framework for the theory in its original context. Looked for commonalities between the research to be completed and the need for an appropriate theoretical framework. Wasnt content to find several applications of the theory to support the transition. 6. Evidence for Success Atkinson and McCrindell (1997) powerfully reinforced the potential for using stakeholder theory in educational research when they identified the government as the primary stakeholder in the public sector mirroring the role of owner found the in the private sector. In their study, the Department of Education was a primary stakeholder. Johnson-Cramer (2008) noted the power of a large corporation was similar to that of governmental power when explaining stakeholder theory. 7. Tying It All Together Day, Harris and Hadfield (2001) noted that the dilemma for many principals in their study was the responsibility they held for the implementation of an externally imposed policy. The policy may challenge personal core values or moral purposes, supporting the research completed by Wicks, Gilbert, and Freeman (1994), Sergiovanni (1998), and Janssens and Seynaeve (2000) and the relationship found between morals, ethics, and stakeholder theory. 8.
