Electrolytes or “salts” are a mix of essential minerals present in the blood and tissues of horses. These electrolytes have many functions, primarily maintaining water balance and blood volume in the body. They also function in muscle contraction, nerve conduction as well as being integral to kidney and liver functions.

Horses lose electrolytes in their sweat. As strenuous exercise can produce up to 10L of sweat, the electrolyte loss can be substantial.

A good equine diet supplies all the necessary nutrients for the gut to digest and absorb so that the body can efficiently use those nutrients to maintain good health.

Proteins are extremely valuable nutrients and their constituents, amino acids, are used as building blocks by all cells of the body to create body mass. The diet must supply sufficient protein to maintain this body mass. Where protein is lacking, muscle (the body’s largest reservoir of protein) is broken down to supply the body’s protein needs.

The Foran Equine Pre-Fuel Range consists of two unique innovative feed supplements providing hydrolysed protein for horses depending on their specific requirements. Hydrolysed proteins are pre-digested to amino acids ready for direct absorption into the body.

Eight of the 11 non-essential amino acids are provided for across the Pre-Fuel range. These amino acids can be produced by the body under normal circumstances, but this process becomes more difficult when the body

is under stress from intense work or heavy efforts. Supplementing them with the Pre-Fuel range during these times ensures that all these nutrients are provided.

For the horse 10 amino acids are essential, which means they cannot be produced by the horse’s body, and must be supplied by the diet. If an essential amino acid is in short supply, proteins containing that essential amino acid cannot be made. In order for a mare to produce a healthy, well-conditioned foal, with sufficient milk to nourish that foal, excellent horsemanship and correct nutrition are required.

For mares being covered and with foal at foot the nutritional demands are greater. Supplementation ensures correct nutrient intake which is necessary for fertility. 65% of in utero foal growth occurs during the last three months of pregnancy and supplementation of the mare helps provide the necessary high quality nutrients, which are essential for foal development and growth.

To maximise a foal’s full athletic potential, they require correct conformation, strong healthy bones and sound joints. The first 18-24 months of a horse’s life is a period of rapid growth, particularly of the skeletal system. NUTRITIONAL GLOSSARYAttapulgite (Aluminium Magnesium Silicate)It acts by binding larger molecules such as water, but, even more effectively, by binding toxins and moving them out of the body. Used to help manage digestive disturbances involving diarrhoea and loose droppings.

Bioflavonoids Include rutin and hesperidine. Bioflavonoids have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. To help maintain strength and function of capillaries.

Biotin (Vitamin H)Involved in the metabolism of carbohydrates, protein and fats. Indication for supplementation is mainly to support healthy hoof horn growth.

Branched Chain Amino Acids (BCAAs)Leucine, isoleucine and valine. Support muscle function and recovery after exercise. During exercise, BCAAs bypass metabolism in the liver and are directly oxidised in the muscle to provide energy.

Calcium As an essential component of bone, it provides strength and rigidity to the skeleton. Calcium also contributes to normal functioning of heart, nerves, muscle and blood clotting.

ChondroitinsFound in connective tissue, cartilage, tendons and ligaments. Supplemented to support these.

CholineInvolved in liver health and as a building block of cell membranes. Precursor for the neurotransmitter, Acetylcholine; thus, involved in the nervous system and in the functioning of muscle.

CobaltBuilding block for synthesis of vitamin B12 in the large intestine.

CopperRequired for the healthy development and integrity of connective tissue. Part of bone development. Responsible for regular pigmentation of skin and hair (involved in the synthesis of the pigment melanin). Supports iron with the synthesis of haemoglobin (mobilises the iron stores in the body).

Emulsified oilFatty acids are the building blocks of fats and oils. Emulsified oil is oil that has been broken down into smaller particles facilitating digestion and absorption in the intestine.

Fats & OilsFatty acids are not only important for a glossy coat, skin and hoof health, but also for the health of joints, as well as the mental, digestive, reproductive, pulmonary and immune systems.

GlucosamineSupports the structure and function of joints.

GlutamineImportant as an energy source including for muscle cells, cells in the lining of the intestine and infection fighting cells in the immune system. Sufficient supply of glutamine during times of exercise stress makes the breakdown of muscle cells to access glutamine unnecessary; thus, glutamine helps to maintain muscle mass.

Glycosaminoglycans (GAGs)Also referred to as Mucopolysaccharides. Examples are heparin (anti-coagulant), chondroitins and hyluronic acid. Essentially they are carbohydrates containing amino sugars – usually proteoglycans (such as chondroitins and HA). A proteoglycan is made of glycosaminoglycan chains.

Herbs and essential oilsEssential oils such as aniseed, thyme, peppermint, eucalyptus and horehound support the loosening of mucus, lubrication of the bronchi, help to fight inflammation and invading pathogens and act against bronchospasm. Licorice has anti-viral properties and can help change the consistency of mucus, allowing for easier passage out of the system.

Hyaluronic Acid (HA)Found in synovial fluid (fluid inside the joint). Supplemented to support production of joint fluids.

Hydrolysed protein Amino acids are the building blocks of protein. Two amino acids linked together by a specific bond form a di-peptide, three amino acids linked together form a tri-peptide. Long chains of amino acids are called polypeptides. Feeding a di- or tri-peptide rather than a long chain of amino acids means that the amino acids can be absorbed much faster and more efficiently.

InulinA soluble fibre. A prebiotic as it promotes the growth of beneficial intestinal bacteria. Resulting in increased utilisation of calcium, phosphorus, copper, iron and manganese. Also enhances flavour (sweet taste), but without producing an insulin response as it is not readily absorbed.

IodineInvolved in regulating basal metabolism by being important for the functioning of the thyroid gland.

IronComponent of haemoglobin and myoglobin. Haemoglobin transports oxygen in the blood. Myoglobin is a protein in heart and skeletal muscle, which carries oxygen.

Lecithin Natural lipid. Especially found in the nervous system and the liver. The gel it forms after contact with water or saliva may improve protective qualities of the natural mucus layer in the stomach by acting as a barrier against the hydrochloric acid of the stomach, protecting the sensitive mucosa.

LysineNeeded to build muscle and to maintain muscles throughout rest periods. Involved in energy production (Kreb’s Cycle). Lysine deficiency inhibits the development of body substance, especially muscle. Grains are generally deficient in lysine in relation to requirements.

Magnesium Necessary for muscle and nerve function. Involved in bone development.

ManganeseEssential for carbohydrate and lipid metabolism. Involved in the synthesis of chondroitin sulphate, and therefore important for healthy joints. Also important for the functioning of the ovaries.

Marine CollagenA source of HA, chondroitin, glucosamine and manganese (as well as some other minerals, such as calcium). Human studies have proven the efficacy of using shark cartilage for healthier joints and, also, in the treatment of some cancer patients.

MethionineSulphur-containing amino acid. Building block of body tissue e.g. muscle or hoof horn. Carnitine is synthesised from lysine and methionine in the liver. Involved in the biosynthesis of cystine, lecithin and many others.

Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM)Biologically active sulphur compound. Promotes joint and ligament health, particularly in conjunction with other ingredients targeting joint health (GAGs). Thought to target osteoarthritis.

Omega-3 fatty acids Anti-inflammatory properties. Increase cellular membrane flexibility. Many other beneficial effects have been attributed to omega-3 fatty acids, such as improvement in breeding performance of broodmares and stallions, and even, reduced incidence of bleeding. Fatty acids play many important roles in the equine diet.

Alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) are omega-3 fatty acids.

Omega-6 fatty acidsImportant for inflammatory reactions to fight infection. Critical for normal functioning of the immune system.

Organic silicaTo support tendon and ligament elasticity. For strong connective tissue. To promote calcification of bones.

PectinMucosal protecting properties.

PhosphorusEssential part of the skeleton. Required for energy transfer reactions.

PotassiumEssential for neuromuscular excitability. Key role in acid-base balance.

Potassium Iodide Mucus thinning properties. Used as an ingredient in supplements supporting the respiratory system when coughs occur. It is a highly available source of iodine.

SeleniumIntegral part of an antioxidant. Works jointly with vitamin E to protect cell membranes. Critical for the functioning of heart and skeletal muscle.

Sodium Acid Citrate Neutralises excess lactic acid in tissues and blood. Citrate salts can actually enter into the muscle cell to target lactic acid built-up there.

Sodium & ChlorideEssential for functioning of the central nervous system. Part of acid-base balance. Regulates the water balance in the body.

TryptophanConverted in the body to nicotinic acid (see vitamin B3) and the neurotransmitter, Serotonin. Serotonin plays a central role in the nervous system.
