What is a course reserve? Professors of any course at the University can request that a library book, CD, DVD, etc. or their own item, be held behind the Circulation Desk and loaned as a reserve for the duration of time they request.

The purpose of reserve items is to allow easier access to a group of students who may need these materials for their coursework.

However, reserve items are available for the use of any students in the class, as well as any library patron with an active account with no blocks

Find the right course number.

Because there are three results which all have the same title, it’s likely these are multiple copies of the same (or similar) books for this single course.

These copies may be located in different libraries, and appear as separate records in the catalog.

If the student has the course syllabus or other item citation with them, sometimes it’s helpful to verify which reserve item they need.

Versions, titles, and authors could vary slightly, so it’s a good idea to double-check to ensure it’s the right item.

Once you’ve found the item that’s located in Bird Library in the catalog, it’s time to find it on the shelf and charge it out to the patron.

Can’t find a reserve item? If you’re unable to find it after following the steps outlined in this presentation, there may be several reasons. If you still can’t find it, always get a supervisor to help you double-check!

Sometimes a student asks for an item that a professor may not yet have placed on reserve.

Reserve items take a bit of time to process after the request is submitted by the professor, and it may not be fully processed yet.

Reserve items for the semester are all released at the same time, so likely an item won’t be available in advance.

Reserves Hot ListSometimes students in the course are waiting for items to be returned.

If someone is waiting for an item to be returned, put it on the Hot List

Do NOT renew any reserve items before checking the Hot List.

If it’s on the list, DO NOT RENEW the item.
