What is an Essay ? An essay is a piece of structured writing . Usually written in formal academic writing. Analysis of the title.

Reason to do extra reading around your subject area. Way to access how will you understand a subject. Method to write a good essay the information you acquire in lectures, away on placement or in

seminars.

What is the purpose of an Essay? An essay is used to state and

support an opinion with proof and explanation.

Essays can be used to persuade others to agree with your opinion.

How to Write an Essay : Writing an essay is a process and

needs to be done in various stages :1) Focus on Backbone of your essay.2) Plan the Essay.3) An interesting introduction.4) Body of the essay.5) An effective Conclusion.6) Reviewing.

1: The introduction : This should identify the question and outline your

position. Don’t rush it as it is the first thing the examiner will read. First impressions count.

2: The first sentences of each paragraph:

These should be clear and to the point. They should identify exactly what that paragraph is about

and show , how it relates to the rest of the essay. The practical tip is to keep the detail/clever ideas for the

body of the paragraph.

a) Planning gives you an idea of where to begin and how to essay should flow.

b) Make sure your essay is in sequence so, it is easy to read.

c) Bullet point ideas will make writing the essay easier.

d) Gather facts and put them under headings they belong.

e) Before writing the essay, make sure your plan is in order so you won’t miss out on anything to write in the essay.

c) Introduction indicates whether your essay will be interesting or boring.

Narrative Essays ( Telling a story )

In a narrative essay, the writer tells a story about a real-life experience. While telling a story may sound easy to do, the narrative essay challenges students to think and write about themselves.

When writing a narrative essay, writers should try to involve the reader by making the story. “I” sentences give readers a feeling of being part of the story.

A well narrative essay will also build towards drawing a conclusion or making a personal statement

Descriptive Essays ( Painting a picture )

A descriptive essay paints a picture with words.

A writer might describe a person, place, object, or even memory of special significance. However, this type of essay is not description for description’s sake.

In a descriptive essay, the writer should show, not tell, through the use of colorful words and sensory details.

The best descriptive essays appeal to the reader’s emotions, with a result that is highly evocative.

Expository Essay ( Just the Facts )

The expository essay is an informative piece of writing that presents a balanced analysis of a topic.

In an expository essay, the writer explains or defines a topic, using facts, statistics, and examples.

You are demonstrating your own knowledge and explaining with facts, not your opinion.

It is very important that your tone be reasonable and that your essay be factual and believable.

Persuasive Essays ( Convince me )

The goal of the persuasive essay is to convince the reader to accept the writer’s point of view or recommendation.

The writer must build a case using facts and logic, as well as examples, expert opinion, and sound reasoning.

The writer should present all sides of the argument, but must be able to communicate clearly.

Compare and Contrast

It could also be written simply to entertain the reader, or to arrive at an insight into human nature.

The essay could discuss both similarities and differences, or it could just focus on one or the other.

A comparison essay usually discusses the similarities between two things, while the contrast essay discusses the differences.

Causes and Effects

The cause/effect essay explains why or how some event happened, and what resulted from the event.

This essay is a study of the relationship between two or more events or experiences

A cause essay usually discusses the reasons why something happened.

An effect essay discusses what happens after a specific event or circumstance.

Sources are often required in a cause/effect paper, and your choice of these sources is important as they reflect on the validity of your argument.

Critical Review

This type of essay can be either formal or informal, depending on the context.

Its goal is to evaluate a work such as an article or book. Your personal, informed, opinion plays a significant role in the process.

In a review you are discussing the overall effect and validity of written work

A good review will discuss both the qualities and the importance of a given work.

Literary In the literary essay, you are exploring the meaning and construction of a piece of literature.

This task is more complicated than reviewing

In a literary essay you are paying more attention to specifics.

A literary essay focuses on such elements as structure, character, theme, style, tone and subtext.

A literary essay may be your own interpretation, based only on your reading of the piece, or it may be a mixture of your opinions and references to the criticism of others,
