Purpose of task• The production exercise (40 marks)

• The comparative analytical assignment should be supported by a production exercise. This exercise will be used to assess candidates' understanding of Media Language and Representation through the candidates’ use of codes and conventions. The prime purpose of the production exercise is to highlight and reinforce the understanding demonstrated in the comparative analytical assignment. Therefore it is important that centres set exercises that enable their candidates to demonstrate their understanding of the media key concepts of Representation and Media Language.

• Students are expected to use the technical resources available to them, including the use of digital media. The use of original photography is required. The choice of production exercise in combination with the comparative analytical assignment must allow candidates to cover more than one media area across this portfolio unit as a whole.

Example 2• Level 2c (14) because….no original photography,

not a clear film poster, text not clear, rushed

• Skills involved:• applying basic text• Cropping photos• Changing colours

• WWW: • Some thought about conventions• Some suitability to genre (colours, choice of

images)

• EBI:• Original photography• More clear titles and tagline• Develop application of text • Text register

Page 15: Film poster conventions and analysis

Example 4• Level 3c (22-23) because….it’s a film poster with some good use of

special f/x and mostly suitable for genre but application is not developed

• Skills involved:• taking photos with basic manipulation (b/w)• Applying text• Basic special f/x (colours)

• WWW: • Good layout• Somewhat clear conventions (title, rating, actor names, clear photo

etc)• Understanding of genre = choice of colours • Effort with special f/x, blending is fairly good

• EBI:• Develop text and special f/x – alien eyes and ‘blood split’ conflicts• Mise-en-scene – facial expression• Text style not appropriate • Framing – not very suspenseful • ‘horror house productions’ = no! • Placement of website, rating and more info

Page 16: Film poster conventions and analysis

Example 1• Level 3a (29-30) because….clear and suitable for genre and solid

technical skills

• Skills involved: • Photography• Lighting (low key)• Application of photos, text• Manipulation of text

• WWW:• Application of most conventions• Layout• Effort with lighting and clear photo• Consistent and suitable choice of text

• EBI:• Be more detailed/exciting it’s rather simple overall)• Be more creative – quite cliche• Develop MES (blood? Make up?)• Don’t be cliché in text for title• Adjust sizes in text (all too similar)

Page 17: Film poster conventions and analysis

Example 3• Level 4b/a 35-36 (because….clear subgenre, excellent technical

skills that are very professional

• Skills involved: • Photography• Lighting (low key)• Application of photos, text• Manipulation of text – special f/x and development of font

• WWW:• Very sophisticated lighting skills• Clever and original concept (title/image/tagline)• MES – facial expression, cake etc• Framing and composition – visual hierarcy

• EBI:• Info at bottom could be developed (bit simplistic) • British info for companies!• (not 40/40 because a little simple and text on side a bit akward)
