Draft Story Board-

We created our story board as a draft to begin with in order to allow us to make some slight alterations that still needed doing and to also determine what exactly will happen within our opening. This then meant that we were able to have multiple idea and decided which ideas looked the best within our film opening.

Final Story Boards-

For our opening shot we decided that we would do an establishing shot to allow the audience to establish out film. We also decided to have it as a panning shot because then it will show the

juxtaposition of the nature and the abandoned house which will create enigma for the audience. We also decided to include diegetic sound of the nature to create more enigma but also make the film opening seem realistic. We will include natural lighting to also make the scene realistic.

For the second shot we also decided to do another panning shot. This is going to be slow paced and it starts for the crime board on the right to the actor, Joel rocking in the corner. We have decided to include eerie music to set the scene for the audience within the first few seconds. Also, for sound we have decided to include Joel murmuring “I’ve let you down, I’m sorry” to again create enigma as to what is wrong with him. Also, we have diegetic sound of some shuffling of feet. Natural lighting will be include again to so that it is a horror for the dark lighting and also make it realistic. Included on the board will be our production logo as the title of the newspaper and the producers and directors of the film written on the board/newspaper to create subtleness. Which shows that the

For our third shot we are going to have a still close up. This is to ultimately introduce the character to the audience a little better. For the sound we will have Joel whispering “Bonnie” repeatedly. His eyes will then light up to show that she is special to him. This is used to also add enigma to the opening as the audience doesn’t know who she is yet. Also, there is still natural lighting included for the realism.

The fourth shot is from the point of view of Joel seeing Bonnie within the doorway. However, it is also a long shot from where Joel is and where Bonnie is stood. We see the silhouette of Bonnie. This is emphasised by a high key light in order to be able to see just a black shadow. Within this scene no sound will be present.

The fifth shot will be a long shot from where Bonnie is stood to show Joel standing up. We will have him standing up but it will look like he is

‘drunk’ (this will show he has been living in isolation for a while). Also, the lighting will return to being natural to again create realism but because it is in the woods the lighting will be darker and it will foreshadow to the audience that he isn’t all he seems. The only sound that will be present will be from the sound of his movement.

The sixth shot will be a long shot. Also, it will track Joel staggering from his position to the doorway that Bonnie was previously present at. This shot also shows his silhouette whilst he is at the door to signify that he is becoming stable again (well what the audience will be thinking at this point). The sound presented will be from his feet being dragged and the rubbish on the floor of the building that he is stepping on.

The seventh shot will be a point of view from Joel. Also, it will be handheld to show that he is disorientated. This will show Joel going out the doorway by a step and he sees the dress of Bonnie just going round the corner. The lighting will be natural again and the sound will be Bonnie’s laughter whilst she is skipping away.

The eighth shot is shown as a long shot of Joel from the behind at in the same position as shot seven. This will show that he is confused as he is just stood still. The sound will be of Joel screaming “Bonnie”. Again, the lighting will be natural to show realism throughout.

The ninth shot will be a point of view shot and again handheld. This will show that he is still disorientated but desperate to find Bonnie. This will show Joel following the dress and going down

the corridor he saw her in and ending up outside. The lighting will be natural and Bonnie’s laughter will be continued.

Shot ten is a low angle close up handheld shot of Bonnie feet whilst she is skipping. There will be eerie music playing to show that something bad is going to happen. Also, there will be sound of Bonnie being happy whilst she skips to show Joel that death isn’t all that bad. The lighting will then be natural again.

The eleventh shot is also a low angle and handheld shot of Joel’s feet. This will show Joel still staggering and disorientated as he doesn’t know what is going on or why his child is there. Therefore, it create more enigma for the audience to put up with. The lighting is going to be natural because it will signify that this is actually happening. The sound will be of Joel still shouting Bonnie.

The twelfth shot again shows Bonnie’s feet from a low angle and handheld because it shows that it is from her walking. Again, she will still be skipping and being portrayed as happy. The lighting will still appear natural so it still shows that it is realistic.

The thirteenth shot is of Joel’s feet still with a low angle and it shows that he is going up to blocks that Bonnie had walked to in the previous shot. The shot is a close up to see what is happing and to focus on solely the feet. This is a tracking shot which moves when Joel takes a step up the stairs. There is diegetic sound of Joel climbing up the stairs. The lighting still appears natural to be able to still make the audience think that the film is real which adds more uneasy to the audience.

The fourteenth shot is of Joel at the top of the blocks. The shot is still a close up of Joel from the front. He appears to be in a contemplation and looks straight forwards looking directly through the noose as if he hasn’t seen. He then moves further up the steps and gets closer to the noose making him appear bigger and the noose so it makes it look like what he is about to do isn’t a bad thing.

Shot fifteen is of the film title. This will be a close up of the words, but will be edited in. The letters will also then just appear randomly and eventually make the words of the title. The background will be black to fit with the genre. The only sound included will be Bonnie’s laughter.

All of these shots were thought out carefully in order to create the atmosphere that we were wanting for our film opening. Combined of them create a very enigmatic opening and also fits with the genre of my film. Including the editing and the mise-en-scene this will make an effective film opening.
