Main Idea – ‘The Story Of Us’Our chosen film genre is Romantic Comedy as we not only enjoy these

films but we feel inspired by them; therefore we have lots of ideas and a vast knowledge of film references.

The main storyline follows a teenage couple through their relationship. Which is why we have called the film; ‘The Story Of Us’, as the film opening is like a brief visual story of the good and the bad times they shared together.

It’s a simple concept but the way in which we will present it will be lighthearted with an artistic edge.

The opening itself will be a tracking shot of the Female Character, Katy, as she sorts through some books in her room. While this is going on there will be credits showing the Film Company Names. Katy will then drop a book and pick it up to find a scrapbook she made of her and the Male Character, Luke’s, relationship. She turns it over to reveal the front cover which displays the film title, The Story Of Us. She then opens it and reminisces about their relationship by looking through the pages of photos, which will also have the titles dotted throughout.

The photos/still footage will then ‘come to life’ and depict poignant moments in their relationship – similar to a flashback. There will be a voiceover from the female protagonist over the top as she looks through the photos, describing how she felt but not giving too much away about the main narrative.

Inspiration…Blue valentine: This film opening inspired the idea of creating a compilation of photos in the scrapbook documenting the couple’s relationship. The photos will also have the same romantic style that the Blue Valentine photos exude; this will make the audience curious about the story between these two individuals.

Legally Blonde: This film opening inspired the idea of having a scrapbook that the female protagonist looks through as her voiceover describes what is happening in the images. The scrapbook will be handmade and decorative, similar to the one used in the Legally Blonde film opening. we will make it before we film and then edit the finished footage into spaces that we have left on the pages.

500 Days of summer: This film opening inspired the whole romantic/indie concept of the film narrative – the idea that the couple have a brief but passionate relationship that ends suddenly with no real explanation. The scrapbook is the only evidence they have of this short but memorable time in their young adolescent lives before they both go their separate ways and grow up. The film opening is meant to subtly hint at the narrative while making the audience curious about the ending of such a perfect relationship.

The Actors

Amelia Walker & Dex ElkingtonWe chose these two students to

be our characters because they both have individual quirky styles, which ties in with the concept of our film. They also have good acting abilities and confidence in front of the camera as well as being good friends, making their chemistry realistic.

Location/ Style of CharactersPark

Cafe

Bedroom

We wanted all of our locations to be realistic places that a teenage couple would visit. So we did some research and came up with three main locations that would be easy to get to and practical places to film in.

Page 7: Film Opening Concept

Sound and Lighting Lighting shouldn’t be a major problem when we are filming scenes in the park as there will be plenty of natural light. However we must not rely on the weather – so if it is a particularly dark or rainy day then we will film the inside scenes in the cafe or bedroom. We have a bright white light that looks like natural light, which we will use when filming inside scenes to avoid the darkness. We will need permission from the cafe owner before we start filming and we will also need to get some test shots of the location to make sure the lighting is a good quality on the computer. Organisation is everything before filming, so we will make sure we know exactly what and when we are doing before we start the filming process.

Apart from the voiceover, there will also be music to reinforce the romantic, light hearted atmosphere of the images. We have experimented with making music on the programme; Soundtrack Pro, which featured in our preliminary task and have downloaded several soundtracks from un-copyrighted sources, so we have a good idea of what style of music to use, however we haven’t made a final decision. When we created our preliminary film we realised how distracting background noise is when watching the footage, so we will make sure that there is hardly any background noise ( however we don’t want silence as this would make it seem unnatural).

Font StyleWe plan to use a font that looks as if it has either been written, typed or printed in an artistic style, so it ties in with the scrapbook theme.

As well as the main film title which will appear on the cover of the scrapbook, there will also be other text spread throughout the scrapbook which will display the names of the cast and crew.

We like the ‘handmade’ style of this font, which would link perfectly to the scrapbook idea. It is also bold and eye catching, so it could be used for the main film title.

We love this font as it evokes a creative and quirky ‘thrown together’ quality. It is this unique quirkiness that we want our characters and film opening to portray.

Target Audience and Costume

We want the costumes to be what our actors wear in their own free time as we want them to appear comfortable and natural; however they will have to be warm clothes as this will portray the autumnal season that we are filming in and that we want to portray on screen. We chose our actors as they not only have good acting abilities but also because we like their unique styles – they both dress in a quirky way, so this will reflect the style of our film. However we will choose the clothes that they wear from a selection of their own favourite clothes as we need to have this control so we are able portray the right message to the audience.

The target audience for the film is teenagers (11 – 19 year olds), mostly female due to the romantic genre. We have researched this specific genre and found that this is usually the target audience and we have also asked many of our friends (16 – 17 year old females) what their favourite film genre is; most of them said romance. We fit into our target market category so we will create a film that we would enjoy.
