World is Flat Questions

• Assuming that you had available resources and you did not have Federal/State restrictions how would you change your classroom/school/district in preparing students for a “flat world”?

• What part of Friedman’s Concepts do you embrace?

• What parts of Friedman’s Concepts do you disagree with?

Challenge• The Massachusetts Board of Elementary and Secondary

Education has just finished reading The World is Flat by Thomas Friedman and have heard Governor Deval Patrick’s Proposal to create 21st Century Schools in Massachusetts.

• The Massachusetts House and Senate has just approved funding for a small number of districts to pilot 21st Century Schools. The funding comes from three sources: Public, University, and Business.

• Several districts are competing for these resources that will include policies and program changes to curriculum, instruction, technology, and organizational practices.

• Your school district is interested in applying to become a pilot district and has chosen your team to prepare a proposal for the Massachusetts Board of Education on how to prepare students for a flat world both in each school and in the district.
