Electricity• Natural phenomenon controlled for different purposes of human

being. Modern technological amenities in the fields of communication, computer, industrial and domestic appliances have been developed through this phenomenon.

• physical phenomenon arising from the existence and interaction of electric charge.

Characteristics• The outstanding characteristics are its mobility and flexibility.

– can be moved to any point along couple of wires and, depending on the user’s requirements

– Can be converted to light, heat and motion.

Electric circuits and current flow• An electric circuit or electric network is an interconnection

of electrical elements linked together in a closed path so that an electric current may flow continuously.

• 1 A current is defined as the constant current in two parallel conductors of infinite length and negligible cross section, one meter apart in vacuum, which produces a force between the conductors of 2 X 10-7 N/m length.

CSE-132: Electrical Circuits:

• Unit of current is Ampere (A). 1A = 1 C/s. Hence 1 A is equivalent to 1 C of charge moving across a fixed surface in 1 s.

• DC (direct current): If the current flowing through an element is constant and of unidirectional

• AC (alternating current): A time varying current i(t) : Such as a ramp, a sinusoidal or an exponential
