Educational Technology
Students expect a highly based interactive classroom.
Using technology is essential in active teaching.
Students will learn critical thinking skills when
engaged in web 2.0 tools and project based learning.
This class has given me the skills to integrate these new
tools in lesson plans.
I am older and have to really focus on learning these
tools but have embraced them.
Technology is a new reality.
One’s initial experience with technology impacts how one uses technology
For the Digital Immigrant technology is not intuitive. It takes me more time to learn a tool. Digital Immigrants have started to embrace technology by using Facebook, web 2.0 tools and iPADS
Teachers need to know that students who are digital natives view learning with technology differently. They are intuitive to this way of learning and incorporate it in every aspect of their lives. This includes in the classroom and school work
Level 1 Awareness Technology is only used by the teacher for attendance or to improve a lesson
Level 2 Exploration Emphasis is on the mechanics of the technology
Level 3 Infusion Students are starting to use critical thinking skills with computer applications
Level 4 Integration Students are using technology as a routine
Level 5 Expansion. There is no longer a division between instruction and technology Project based assignments require students to go beyond the classroom
1 Creativity and Innovation Creating original work 2 Communication and Collaborating Working with
groups 3 Research and Information Fluency Original
Research papers complete with a bibliography 4 Critical Thinking Problem Solving and Decision
Making Creating Surveys and Evaluating results 5 Technology Operations and Concepts How to use
technology 6 Digital Citizenship knowing about copyright and
cyber bulling and making good ethical decisions
Facilitate and Inspire Student Learning and Creativity Create worthwhile assignments
Design and Develop Digital Age Learning Experiences and Assessment Monitor student progress
Model Digital Age Work and LearningTeachers need to be fluent in the content and how to use the technology in a professional and responsible manner for todays society.
Promote and Model Digital Citizenship and
Responsibility
Teacher need to understand society’s issues and how
to accommodate all learners in an ever-changing
digital culture following legal and ethical behavior in
their professional practices. Differentiate instruction
Engage in Professional Growth and Leadership
Keep current and active in professional organizations
Blogs http://bookwhittle.blogspot.com/ This is a great way to stay connected with students and parents
and other professionals . Easy to update and follow. The teacher can have a blog that students can follow. Students can learn a new web 2.0 tool each week by following the blog.
Wiki http://ed204tecp63.wikispaces.com/Web+2.0+Fall+2012 This was our class wiki. Wikis are collaborative. Great way to
share information with colleagues Very useful for setting up a calendar for visits to the library media center. Include a Google calendar on a wiki for meeting access and homework.
Podcasts Witness Ann Franks Diary The BBC interviewed
Ann’s sole surviving cousin Useful for teaching primary sources.http://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/anne-frank-trust-uk-podcast/id271212736
Ann Frank Trust UK Podcast The trust had a letter writing campaign Great way to see how other students study Ann Frank around the world http://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/witness-anne-franks-diary/id339986758?i=117305000&mt=2
I like the Google tools that we researched in this
class. Chart go is a very easy site to use to create
a chart. Ever note is a tool that students can use
to take notes and stay organized. Glogster was a
fun tool used for introductions and creating a
personal poster. Puzzlemaker could be used to
create word searches and cross word puzzles. All
of the Google tools are on my blog at
http://bookwhittle.blogspot.com/
Used for professional development and keeping up
with technology.
I went to iTunes U Resource and found information
on Evernote as well as information from the State of
Maine talking about the research process using the
state library databases. Evernote is a great place for
note taking and staying organized.
Edmodo Activities This site was like a
Facebook account. Very useful for teachers.
We looked at some bogus internet sites. The
NETSMARTZ sites were very educational .
Used for educating children on internet safety.
Twitter can be very useful for discussions and
surveys. I think you have to caution students with
what is written on their accounts.
The CRAAP test is an excellent way to teach web site
evaluation. Is the site current, relevant, accuracy,
authority and what is the purpose?
Portaportal is a bookmarking tool. Users need to sign
up, add categories, and web links to each category
complete with descriptions.
Digital Citizenship Students need to know how to
cite sources and not plagiarize. They should also be
taught about copyright . Students should be taught not
to cyber bully.
Webquests are useful lesson plans. They are self
contained and have all the elements needed for a
complete unit assignment . Students will have fun
completing the quest.
iPads are very useful for students to access eBooks. Tablets are great for accessing electronic textbooks. iPads are very useful for autistic children and children with limited communication. The apps are very useful.
Smart boards are interactive. Students can participate
in lessons using smart boards. They can walk up to a smart board and answer questions. The graphics are very nice and engaging
Email is essential in parent communication
I think most teachers rely on email as the means of
communicating with colleagues and parents.
The online grading system that school districts subscribe
to is also a great communication tool. Parents can access
the portal from home or work and then email teachers
The animate cartoon was a cute way to address parent and
teacher concerns and could be placed on a school web
page.
Excel is a tool for assessment. Rubistar’s Rubrics
need to be downloaded to Excel.
Many rubrics can be found online
Normed Assessments like the Woodcock Johnson
Achievement test has an online tool for scoring
Curriculum based measures are found online. They
are invaluable measures for IEP’s.
Video resources are very useful to teachers. Many students are visual learners. English teachers and Social Studies Teachers often show movies to supplement the curriculum. Reading a book and watching a movie of the same title is very thought provoking. Many programs on PBS and the History Channel are very useful.
PowerPoint is a great tool to use. Lecture notes can be shown on PowerPoint.
Students love to use power points for
group projects. High students like to use
tools like flip cameras to make original
videos and short films.

Students that have functional and physical limitations
need the right equipment. The assistive technology insures
that students have the accessibility needed for their
academics and help with everyday life.
Today’s technology ( iPADS, tablets and voice activated
software) have made a great impact with creating that
level playing field in the classroom. I just ordered the
manual on the one hand typing tutorial
This equipment opens the student’s world to so many
possibilities.
It is important to respect the rights of those who
create. Copyright refers to the rights to prepare, copy,
distribute, perform or display work.
Fair use is a law that guides teachers to what material
is acceptable for teaching. Some material can be used
without payment, or permission for educational
purposes within certain guidelines.
Teachers can make limited copies of articles, show
certain television programs and other copyrighted
works for educational purposes.
Teachers need to follow the Fair Use Guidelines for
school projects. Fair use can not substitute for
subscriptions or purchases.
Some material in the public domain has no restrictions
Creative Commons is a non profit organization that
enables sharing and use of creativity for images, text,
video and music. It is a clearinghouse.
Use lesson plans that discuss copyright.
Require all students to cite their work.
Teach them to use citation generators.
Discuss copyright and relationship to
lyrics, music and movies.

an exam
Crossword puzzles and word searches can
be made on puzzlemaker
I feel more confidence with learning new tech
