Digipaks
What is a digipak• A digipak is a type of packaging for CD’s or DVD’s, typically
made from cardboard with an internal plastic holder for one or more discs.
• Digipak-style packaging is often used for CD singles or special edition versions CD albums.
• Typically consist of gatefold (book-style) paperboard or card stock outer binding, with one or more plastic trays capable of holding a CD or DVD attached to the inside generic.
• They commonly include a DVD, lyric book, artist photos or imagery and a track list.

• The DVD digipak is a popular alternative to the DVD box which is now widely used for feature film DVD releases which are special editions because it increases the value and creates a premium product.
• Can be made from recycled card and producing the digipak uses much less plastic.

What is a jewel case?
• A jewel CD case is a compact disc case that has been used since the compact disc was first released in 1982.
• The case consists of three pieces of plastic constructed into a book like style and contains a tray to hold the disc.
• The back card typically provides a table of contents for the disc while the front facing inserts will display artwork, logo’s or titles with additional information in the proceeding insert pages.

• CD digipaks give a more expensive professional look and feel to the consumers in comparison to jewel cases.
• Digipaks is an extremely versatile packaging and are virtually shatterproof. They also allow great graphic design and very inexpensive prices.
• Jewel cases are much easier to break/damage and more likely to show wear over time.
• Digipaks are also a more environmentally friendly option as they can be made from recycled materials in comparison to jewel cases.
History of a digipak
• Digipaks were first created by MeadWestvaco, and their product, called digipak, is trademarked.
• As digipaks became more popular, they began to be used by more manufacturers.
• Originally used for the album packaging of leading musicians, the digipak and digipak family are now priced reasonably enough to be used for any CD or DVD project.
Dimensions • Most digipaks are often 5.5” x 5.5” or (14cm x 14cm) standard.• (Based on a standard 4pp digipak): finished size of 139.5mm x
6mm x 125.5mm• However they can come in custom sizes as the panels can be
increased from 4 to 6, 8 or more.• They are made from a custom printed card packaging that can
hold one or more CD’s which are held in place with plastic trays (CD flexitrays) which are glued into the digipak.
• 300gsm card with matt or gloss varnish. Printed 4 colours (CMYK) or pantone colours.
• Also available in spot varnish, lamination and embossing.
