Book Recommendation
Great book for corporations who are looking to build succession leadership. Also, this book will help any corporation set up a leadership development education program within the context of their own organization.

Group or Functional Approach Basic requirement—led should
understand task & trust leader. Group should know how to do what is
expected of them. Needs of the group are interactive
and dynamic. They are to achieve a common task, maintain unity as a team, acknowledge individual needs.
Functions of leadership Planning Initiating Controlling Supporting Informing Evaluating
The Leader is accountable for all needs of the group.
Situational Approach Leadership is a relationship that exist between
people in social situations. Persons who are leaders in one situations may
not necessarily be leaders in other situations
Today’s leadership style is a mixture of all 3 approaches—they cannot be
separated.

Levels of Leadership
Team Leads 10 to 20 people Has clearly specified tasks
Operational Leads one of the main areas of organization Has more than one team lead under him
Strategic Head of organization with operational leads
under his direction His seven functions are to : provide vision,
strategic thinking and planning, operational/administration, organizational fitness, morale, relating the organization to society, and teaching and leading.
Seven Key Principles
Principle 1: Training for Leadership
Think First
Never give someone the role without training them
Start with a good candidate
Principle 2: Selection
Consider them against such concepts as:
leadership and teamwork
decision-making skills
communication skills
self-management skills
personal qualities
Principle 3: Line Managers as Leadership Mentors
A mentor is a guide, a wise and trusted counselor
This is the apprentice method
Line leaders act as teachers
Principle 4: Chance to LeadThis is the opportunity at hand, a true leader loves a challengeIndividuals & leadership should get together at least once a year to compare notes on career development & promotions
Principle 5: Education for LeadershipHow people learn: teaching, training, education, instructing, tutoring, coaching, and mentoringSociety has some responsibility for growing its leaders.
Principle 6: Strategy for Leadership Development3 Hall marks for development: long-term importance—think ahead multi-componentMust balance the whole and the partsGive as much freedom in decision making to leaders as possible within the constraints of the business
