DAEDALUS AND ICARUS
Daedalus was a highly respected athenian artistan
descendent from the royal family of Cecrops , the
mythical king of Athens.
He was talented in sculpture and a great inventor.
Despite his self-confidence Daedalus committed a
crime of envy against Talus and threw him off of
Acropolis.
For this crime Daedalus was exiled to Crete and
worked for King Minos. There he had a son with the
beautiful Naucrate.
Minos told Daedalus to build a labyrinth in order to
imprison a dreaded Minotaur, which was a monster
with the head of a bull and the body of a man.
Poseidon had sent it to him as a gift. Minos was
shamed by the birth of such a creature and
imprisoned it to the labyrinth where it fed it on
humans.
Theseus was very upset by his action and went to
Crete in order to kill the animal.
Ariadne who was the son of Minos fell in love with
Theseus and with Daedalus they helped him to find
the way back of the labyrinth.
Minos learnt about Daedalus action and he
imprisoned him and Icarus in the labyrinth
themselves.
Daedalus made wings of wax in order to escape.
They managed to escape and to fly away..
..however Daedalus told Icarus not to fly too close to
the sun but Icarus overheared him and his wings
melted.
The sea where he fell was named Icario after him
and the island Heracles discovered his body was
named Icaria.
