Visitor must be a participant, not just as an observer.

Involvement must be phenomenologically driven, not ocularcentric

Page 9: Critique presentation

MultiplicityMultiplicity

Openness of narration/meaning

Topographic (landscape), rather than monumental (objective)

Multiplicity rather than singularity Holocaust memorial - arbitrary number of stellae Stolpersteine - uncoordinated, installation is unravelling Gay Memorial - metonymic, one couple for countless

individuals

Timing: Reanimation at particular times?

Unexpected

According to an algorithm?

Enacts multiplicity

ControversyControversy

Memory/Forgetting are not politically neutral

A memorial is not some sacred space outside of politics.

It is the dirty space where politics are enacted. The very concretion of politics and events that were political.

Memorials Sacred : Abject ?

Remembering/ForgettingRemembering/Forgetting

Remembering/Forgetting are not separate activities (not a binary)

Neither is ever complete: never oblivion or total recall

Palimpsest - partial, layered residue Not erasure - mutability

Unpredictable, organic process
