ARTIST NAME

The artists name is crucial on a magazine advert as the artist is a brand. Therefore the artist usually

has a logo made out of their name which will be associated with the artists brand such as

singles, albums, tour and adverts.

Within a magazine advert there are a few conventions needed; one of these is having the artists logo.

This is so the audience can identify the band as it will stand out from the other artists adverts

in the magazine. Below are some examples of pop/rock artist logos that can be found in a

magazine that aims to the audience that are interested in our genre of music;

MAGAZINE REVIEWS

One common convention featured in the album adverts in magazines is that they all have the release

date to inform the audience of the details of when they can buy the album. The release date is

typically situated at the bottom third of the mise en scene, this attracts the audience’s eyes to

the same section of all of the adverts. They have ensured that it is situated at the same place so

the audience know straight away where to find the details of the release date. We initially

thought that reviews would be a convention featured in all magazine adverts however, from the

research we found that it isn’t featured very often at all. Since the reviews will help sell the

magazine and identify the genre, we have decided that this is a important thing to feature.

IMAGE

Another significant convention is of course the main picture. The picture is used to attract the right

kind of audience. For example if Rihanna was doing a magazine advert, you wouldn’t see a

picture of a man with a gun or some kind of violence. The would attracted the wrong kind of

audience. The picture is mainly placed in the centre and it covers the entire page while other

texts would be placed over the top of it. But some artists have recently started using multiply

pictures and places them all around but that does depend of the genre again. Because our

genre is pop rock is will typically be one picture of the band standing together wearing casual

clothing. When looking into magazine adverts a lot of people argue this is the most important

thing because it is the first thing people see and this is what has to grab peoples attention

straight away.

Photo – should be of band

Mise en scene;

natural.
