BILLOWY BODICE

ELASTIC SLEEVE

An elastic inserted into the hem of apant or top for the purpose of bringing

the material tight to the waist.

ELASTIC WAIST

A type of pant that sits flat againstthe front of the body and doesn't

have any pleats.

FLAT FRONT

A waistband in a pant or skirt thatis very wide and is meant to be

folded over when worn.

FOLDOVER

A typically trapezoid shaped piecesewn to other similar shaped pieces

to create a skirt or a dress.

GORED

A triangle or diamond shaped pieceinset between two or more seams to

add room to the seam.

GUSSET

A hemline on a skirt or dressformed by panels of fabric whichfall in points resembling the corner

of a handkerchief.

HANDKERCHIEF HEM

A type of pleat sewn into thebottom hem of a tight fitting skirtor dress to allow ease of movement.

KICK PLEAT

A garment that has an additionallayer of different material attachedto the inside to make it warmer, tohang better, or to make it less

transparent.

LINED

An insert into a garment, typically abra cup, that is intended to add

fullness.

PADDED

A short flared, gathered, or pleatedstrip of fabric attached at the waist

of a woman's jacket, dress, orblouse to create a hanging frill or

flounce

PEPLUM/FLOUNCE

A fold or series of folds in the fabricof a garment to add volume or as a

design detail.

PLEATED

Sewn sections that have been filledwith feathers or batting.

PUFFER

Made of two layers of cloth filledwith a padding that is held in place

with stitching.

QUILTED

Fabric that has been gathered onboth edges and each edge hasbeen sewn into another piece of

fabric.

RUCHING

A gathered section of material thatis typically used to add fullness or

style to a garment.

RUFFLE

Made using fabric of thin threadand/or low density of knit whichresults in a semi-transparent and

flimsy cloth.

SHEER

A garment, typically a coat orjacket, with narrow overlappingfront flaps and one column of

buttons or snaps.

SINGLE BREASTED

A decoration on a garment createdby gathering a section of thematerial into tight pleats and

holding them together with parallelstitches in an ornamental pattern.

SMOCKING

A style that has seams that followthe shape of the body and can beeasily altered. Typically lined.

TAILORED

Rows of fabric that have been sewnin rows to each other or on top ofeach other in such a way to makethe item look like it has multiple

levels.

TIERED

A shaped pattern piece which formspart of a garment, usually fittingaround the neck and shoulders or

around the hips, to provide support forlooser parts of the garment (such as agathered skirt or the body of a shirt).
