The Circulatory System

Page 2: Circulatory system

Also known as the cardiovascular system, your heart, blood vessels and blood itself are three

essential components the body needs to survive.

The circulatory system consists of two circuits that blood travels through; pulmonary and

systemic. This means the blood passes through the heart twice.

Blood vessels: los vasos sanguíneosPulmonary: pulmonarSystemic : sistémico

Circuits: circuitos

Page 3: Circulatory system

Exercise affects these systems, causing the heart to pump blood faster around the body,

which allows you to exercise for longer!

To pump: bombear

Page 4: Circulatory system

What is the Circulatory System composed of?

The circulatory system is composed of the heart, arteries, capillaries and veins.

It serves to transport blood low in oxygen from the body to the lungs and heart (veins), and oxygenated blood from the

lungs and heart throughout the body (arteries)

Transport: trasladarComposed of: compuesto de

Oxygenated: oxigenado/a

So what does this mean?

Blood low in oxygen in the body…

Heart and Lungs: Oxygenate the blood

Oxygenated blood in the heart and lungs

Goes back into the body

In more detail…The pulmonary circuit carries blood to the lungs to

be oxygenated and then back to the heart. In the lungs, carbon dioxide is removed from the blood, and oxygen

taken up.

The systemic circuit carries blood around the body to deliver the oxygen and returns de-oxygenated blood to the

heart.

And the process starts again!

Where is your heart?Try to find your heart and your pulse rate.

How many pumps a minute can you count?

The HeartThe heart is a muscle about the size of your fist. It works like a pump (una bomba) and beats 100,000 times a day.

The right side of the heart pumps blood to the lungs to pick up oxygen. The left side of the heart receives the oxygen-rich blood from the lungs and pumps it to the body.

Heart ChambersThe heart has four chambers or "rooms."The atria are the two upper chambers that collect blood as it flows into the heart.

The ventricles are the two lower chambers that pump blood out of the heart to the lungs or other parts of the body.

How does blood travel to and from the heart?

THERE ARE THREE TYPES OF BLOOD VESSEL

ARTERIES

VEINS

CAPILLARIES

Carry (oxygenated) blood away from the heart

Carry (de-oxygenated)blood to the heart

Where gas exchange takes place.
