Current Sex Ratio of India in 2011 is 940 Females/1000 Males.Sex Ratio of India - Sex Ratio is a term used to define number of females per 1000 males. It's a great source to find the equality of males and females in a society at a given period of time. In India Sex Ratio was okay till the time of Independence, thereafter it has declined regularly. According to Census of India 2001, Indian sex ratio has shown some improvement in the last 10 years. It has gone up from 927 in 1991 census to 933 in 2001 census of India. There has been some improvement in the Sex Ratio of India but it has gone in some states very badly like Haryana. The state of Kerala with 1058 has best sex ratio in India. Haryana has the lowest sex ratio of 861 females per 1000 males. So Sex Ratio of India depends from region to region, it varies from state to state also.The states of South India have the best Sex Ratio of females per 1000 males. Some important facts about Sex Ratio of India are presented here:• Kerala with 1058 females per 1000 males has the highest female literacy rate according to 2001 Census of India.• The state of Haryana has the lowest female literacy rate in India.• In Union Territories of India, Daman and Diu has the lowest female sex ratio while Pondicherry has the highest female sex ratio in India.• There is some extent of gender bias in India are responsible for this decline in female ratio however there is some improvement in sex ratio of India.• Lack of education and poverty in rural areas.

What is Sex Ratio?

• It is an index of male - female (im)balance in population.

• Sex ratio, in India, is defined as the number of females per 1000 males in the population. Internationally sex ratio is defined as number of males per 100 females.

• At the Census 2001, sex ratio of population stood at 933 females per 1000 males a marginal increase from 927 recorded at the 1991 Census

Child Sex Ratio

• Child sex ratio, i.e., sex ratio in the age group 0 to 6 years is a powerful indicator to examine the SOCIAL RESPONSE and ATTITUDE towards the GIRL CHILD in recent past.

• The presentation of data on child sex ratio has shown a grim picture of the status of girl child in some parts of the country as per the Census of India 2011.

Decline in child ratio from 962 in 1981 to 914 in 2011 has somewhat activated to political, legal and administrative set up of the country. However the Census findings should now be converted into a tangible action plan to help the cause of the girl child.

Analysis of Census Data

• 'It is clear that the sex ratio in the age group 0-6 has decreased at a much faster pace than the overall sex ratio of the country after 1981.

• decreasing sex ratio in this child population perhaps has a cascading effect on the population over a period of time leading to diminishing sex ratio in the country.

In Result

One thing is clear- the imbalance that has set at the early age-group is difficult to be removed and would remain to haunt the population for a long time to come.

To say the least, demographically the sex ratio of 927 of the population in the age-group 0-6 does not augur well for the future of the country specially girl child.

Can we wait for the next census in 2021 to tell whether the sex ratio at birth have improved or further deteriorated ?
