Canvas Evaluation Survey ResultsCerritos College
Conducted by the Technology Based Learning CommitteePresented to Faculty SenateNovember 24, 2015
Canvas Evaluation Overview
• TBLC ran the trial from 9/15 – 11/2• 90 individuals volunteered to evaluate Canvas• 53 people submitted the survey• All divisions represented in the survey• 32 departments represented in survey
How did the trial work?
• Volunteers were given a unique username/password
• They were enrolled as an instructor in three demo classes. Two had content, one was blank that they could create from the ground up.
• Volunteers could evaluate the CMS on their own or could attend one of four workshops offered at the CTX.
1. Select your academic division.
2. What department are you in?
3. Describe your experience with online education.
4. Evaluation of Tasks After exploring Canvas, please indicate your level of agreement.
5. Overall Impressions.
6. Is there anything else you'd like to tell us about Canvas?
• 29 responses • 19 coded as positive• 8 coded as negative• 5 as concerns that need to be addressed if
adopted(Some responses contained positive and negative elements.)
Positive Response Themes
• User friendly for instructor & student: Speed Grader, apps, less clicking when creating content, easy to hyperlink between sections, video help, multiple communication options with students
• Apps for phones and tablets• Interface like that of traditional social
networking
Negative Response Themes
• Visually clunky• Excel files can’t be uploaded or downloaded,
only CSV• Hard to figure out• Takes longer to set up assignments or quizzes
Concerns
• How will the migration of content from TalonNet work? How much will migrate, what will we have to rebuild? What support will the District provide?
• Will the system be set up to make it easier to communicate with multiple sections at the same time? (40+ sections for math classes.)
• What functionality will the “admin allow”?• What “extras” will we pay for?
