DESCRIPTION

Angel Xpress Foundation is a Mumbai-based non-profit organization (registered as a Section 25 company), working for the education of underprivileged children. It is created around a mission to provide keen donors and volunteers with an opportunity to make a direct contribution to help alleviate the problem of illiteracy at the same time attempting to create a better and a more homogeneous society. The foundation has undertaken the task of connecting educated, fortunate adults of a locality with children from underprivileged backgrounds in the neighborhood, mostly first generation learners from neighboring slums through free classes organized in public spaces. Reports show that between 70-80% children on an average across India and over 50% in municipal schools across Mumbai are at near illiteracy level even after 3 to 4 years of schooling. In order to reach a large number of such children and also to help reverse the trend of dropping enrolments in BMC schools and in maintaining which the government is spending a large fortune, we appoint competent teachers to work with BMC Vernacular Medium Schools. With our program, today we teach over 600 children at our centers and reach out to almost 1700 students inside BMC schools. Our plan is to set up 10 independent centers in public spaces and expand our presence inside BMC schools and reach out 5000 student in the next 5 years. We are seeking funding support for our Inschool project and volunteer support for our open air class program, do let us know if you can support our endeavor in any way. The presentation explains our journey, objectives and what inspires us to do this.

MissionWe want to impact every segment of society positively:

• By infusing in the children a love for learning coupled with a desire to excel and be at the best of their abilities

• By teaming up with committed teachers who also act as loving, enthusiastic foster parents

• By translating wishes into vision, and letting empathetic adults fulfill their desire of contributing to society – even if it is just for an hour, everyday

• By ensuring transparent and honest use of donors’ money so that they know exactly how it is being channelized, at any given point of time

Platform for educated parents

How will we achieve this?• At Our Learning Centers

We have set up learning centres in conveniently located parks and promenades across Mumbai. Besides free tutoring in English and Math, children receive value education, civic sense, extra-curricular classes, essential items through redistribution and improved exposure through treats and sponsored outings organized by donors, on special occasions.

• In Vernacular Medium Schools

The children currently attending the vernacular medium schools can acquire a better education with the introduction of English lessons from competent teachers (appointed by AXF) in such schools. This, we believe, will also help reverse the trend of dropping enrolments in vernacular medium schools.

Our StoryIn January 2012, Anubha Sharma, a senior financial services professional, posted a Facebook request to donate clothes and toys for slum children; while she was volunteering to teach at a street school. A single Facebook post generated 3000 calls from willing contributors within a week – highlighting a need to connect the donors and the deprived. This event turned her life around, converting her from a corporate go-getter to a social entrepreneur.

Beenaa Advani co-founder, a businesswoman engaged in running Euro kids outlets for over 10 years,
