The exotic offerings of theThai Pavilion – Buddhist

merit making, traditional Thaimassage, fiery cuisine andstreet vendors – will be a high-light at Italy’s 53rd VeniceInternational Art Exhibition, taking place from June 7 toNovember 22.

Paradise Co LtdThese many faces of

Thailand are all part of thetongue-in-cheek installation“Gondola al Paradiso Co Ltd”proposed by Silpakorn Univer-sity art lecturer Thavorn Ko-udomvit and featuring five

Thai artists. Cross-dresserMichael Shaowanasai andSakarin Krue, returning toVenice’s Thai Pavilion after ap-pearances in 2003, are joinedby new faces Sudsri Pui-ock,Suporn Shoodej and Wantha-nee Siripattanutakul.

Satirising the image of“Thainess” created by advertis-ers, the artists will convert a

400-square-metre basement onthe banks of the Grand Canalinto a travel agency. With abudget of Bt5 million supportedby Culture Ministry’s Office ofContemporary Art and Culture(OCAC), the Thai Pavilion willbe fully interactive.

“We want to question thebeauty and substance of‘Thainess’ as an image that’sbeen created for global con-sumption,” Thavorn explained.

Land of cheeky smilesViewers will be greeted by

Michael Shaowanasai, Photo-Shopped to mimic a wai-ingThai Airways hostess. Video in-stallations will fill the spacewith images of exotic Thai cul-ture and destinations while onecorner will offer Thai massage, and another corner Thai food.

“The winning project reflects

the cultural impact of capital-ism and globalisation throughcontemporary art,” said OCAC’sgeneral director Apinan Posh-yananda, speaking at a pressconference yesterday at theBangkok Arts and CultureCentre. Its focus on audience-interaction and the collabora-tive process also fitted thisyear’s concept, he added.

“Under Swedish curatorDaniel Birnbaum, the exhibi-tion will not be divided intosections but instead weave afew themes into an articulatedwhole,” said Luca de Mori, cul-tural attache at the ItalianEmbassy in Bangkok. “Threeaspects will be focused on: theprocesses of production, theinfluence of certain key artistsand the generations that havefollowed; and an exploration ofdrawing and painting.”

With an upgrade to its mo-bile maps, Google

hopes to prove it can trackpeople on the go as effectivelyas it searches for informationon the Internet.

The new software enablespeople with mobile phonesand other wireless devices toautomatically share theirwhereabouts with family andfriends.

The feature, dubbed “Lati-tude”, expands upon a tool in-troduced in 2007 to allow mo-bile-phone users to check theirown location on a Google mapwith the press of a button.

“This adds a social flavourto Google maps and makes itmore fun,” said Steve Lee, aGoogle product manager.

Privacy concernsIt could also raise privacy

concerns, but Google is doingits best to avoid a backlash byrequiring each user to manual-ly turn on the tracking softwareand making it easy to turn offor limit access to the service.

Google also is promising notto retain any informationabout its users’ movements.Only the last location picked up by the trackingservice will be stored on

Google’s computers, Lee said. The software plots a user’s

location – marked by a person-al picture on Google’s map –by relying on cellphone tow-ers, global positioning systemsor a Wi-Fi connection to de-duce their location. The sys-tem can follow people’s travelsin the United States and 26other countries.

It’s left up to each user todecide who can monitor his orher location.

The social mapping ap-proach is similar to a servicealready offered by Loopt Inc.

Loopt’s service already iscompatible with more than100 types of mobile phones.

To widen the software’s ap-peal, Google is offering a ver-sion that can be installed onpersonal computers as well.

Actor Christian Bale can beheard in newly surfaced

audio delivering a long, pro-fanity-laced verbal thrashingto a cinematographer and any-one who tried to calm himdown on the set of the upcom-ing movie ‘TerminatorSalvation’.

The three-minute clip wasposted on the websiteTMZ.com and has become aviral sensation on the Internet– it’s even spawned a dancemusic remix of the audio tape.

In it, the actor who por-trayed Batman in ‘The DarkKnight’ rails against cine-matographer Shane Hurlbutfor apparently walking behindco-star Bryce Dallas Howard

and throughBale’s line ofsight, consid-ered a film-setfoul.

“If you do itone more timeI ain’t walkingon this set if

you’re still hired!” Bale howlsin one of the few publishablemoments from the clip.

Screaming and yellingLater, he screams: “Do you

want me to go and trash yourlights? Do you want me to goand trash them? ... Then whyare you trashing my scene?”

The incident took place lastJuly on the set at Kirtland AirForce Base in New Mexico,

days before Bale would face as-sault allegations from hismother and sister in London.Charges were never filed be-cause his family did not want topress the matter and becauseprosecutors said there was alack of sufficient evidence.

Bale’s is the only voice thatis audible on the tape, thoughhe’s clearly responding toHurlbut, the film’s directorMcG, and others trying to per-suade him to relax.

“Let’s not take a [expletive]minute! Let’s go again!” heyells at one point.

Music producer LucianPiane – who goes by the nameRevoLucian online – remixedthe verbal freak-out into athree-minute-long hypnoticdance track titled Bale Out,which has become a virtualhit.

Bus-sizedboa slithersinto recordbooksStunned scientists have foundthe fossilised remains of theworld’s greatest snake – arecord-busting serpent thatwas as long as a bus andsnacked on crocodiles.

Michael Shannon is a big,imposing guy who’s

played a lot of intense, impos-ing characters in such films as“Bug”, and “Shotgun Stories”.In “Revolutionary Road”, SamMendes’ film about 1950s angst,Shannon cranks up the intensi-ty to almost uncomfortable lev-els.

The film reunites “Titanic”stars Kate Winslet andLeonardo DiCaprio as Apriland FrankWheeler, a marriedsuburban couple who seek tobreak free of their staid exis-tence. As John Givings, a bril-liant mathematician who’s suf-fered a mental breakdown,Shannon has two pivotalscenes with the couple, scenesin which his brutal honestycuts to the very core of theirdisintegrating relationship, andhis powerful acting has earnedhim an Oscar nomination forBest Supporting Actor.

I never knew the 1950s were sotraumatic until I saw“Revolutionary Road”.

It was an era of containment,it seems to me. People weretrying to keep it all togetherand keep it inside.

Does Richard Yates give JohnGivings a back-story in the novelon which the film is based?

Not really. He talks aboutJohn having a breakdown andcoming home, and how hismother tried to take care ofhim. Basically, he wanted to killher and blamed her for all ofhis problems.

There are some clues, I think,in just kind of a superficial way.He is an only child and I as-sume he wasn’t very popular in

school or very athletic.

John really serves as a bookendto April and Frank’s story.

He really is important to thestory. It's a hard movie to de-scribe to people when they askyou what it's about. But if youboil it down to its essence, it'sabout Frank and April trying todecide whether to stay on andsuffer silently or try to liberatethemselves and escape to a bet-ter life?

The first time we see Johnthey are celebrating their deci-sion and kind of revelling inthis newfound sense of free-dom. John is there to kind ofcelebrate and validate their de-cision. Then John comes back, and this freedom has crumbled, and he’s there to castigate andpunish them for their loss offaith. I think that’s the reallybeautiful thing about the char-acter.

Wisut Ponnimit, creator of the bizarre“hesheit” cartoons popular in several

The he-she-it charac-ters were a hit about adecade ago, strange, rawand fun, with startlinghandwritten dialogue, often crossed out re-placed with ideas on atangent.

After three years inJapan, though, his stripsare slower in sequenceand complete with neatdrawing, clean lines andminimal chatter.

“The fresh environ-ment changed my life,”says the 31-year-old.“The change of lifestyle

had an impact on my work, and the more Idraw, the more confidence I have in thelines.”

You can see the artwork he came up withfor Japan’s Big Issue and L magazines andhis book “everybodyeverything”. There are

depictions of relation-ships between siblings, couples, strangers and agirl and her pet.

And you’ll meet his newcharacter Mamuang, acute young girl withbangs, created in Japan in2003.

“‘Hesheit’ appeals to artlovers and graphic design-ers, but it’ too bizarre formost people, says Wisut.“To get in the door ofJapanese culture I createdMamuang with simple, clean lines and a cheerfuldesign, which should be

more adaptable for animation.”Mamuang was picked up by advertisers,

even selling Yamaha pianos, so Wisut re-warded her with a pet dog called Manowand a boy buddy named Maprao.

Then there’s Lung Lin, who’s bald and hasa big, lolling tongue, deliberately ugly be-cause Wisut doesn’t actually like “drawingcute things”.

Last April, Pierre Kattar Jrgave his father the gift of

all gifts: a new chance at life. The gift – presented in an in-

sulated, red-and-white box atChicago’s NorthwesternMemorial Hospital – was a kid-ney. But Kattar didn’t give hisleft kidney directly to his fa-ther: His donation was one of

four in an extraordinary eight-person kidney exchange.

With the help of friends,Kattar Jr, 34, a Washington-post.com video journalist, cre-ated a video documentary ofthis rare opportunity to get hisfather an organ he desperatelyneeded.

Pierre Kattar Sr, 61, had suf-fered for most of his life fromhepatitis B, a liver disease, andhis kidneys had been weak-

ened by drugs he began takingafter a liver transplant in 2001.

After his kidneys stoppedfunctioning in February 2007,four-hour dialysis sessionsthree times a week became hisnew lifesaving regime. KattarSr, who lives in Chicago, stayed on dialysis for about ayear.

Father and son turned out tohave incompatible bloodtypes, which prevented a di-

rect donation. So theNorthwestern Memorial staffconnected the pair with twoother would-be donors in asimilar situation as well as adonor from the hospital’s staffand one other recipient. InApril, the hospital coordinatedthe elaborate exchange of fourkidneys among eight people.

“This has been a lifetime ex-perience. What we have livedis unique,” says Kattar Sr.

My teeth have been yellowsince I was young. Who canfix this problem for me, or isthere some product I canbuy to do it myself?

Tooth bleaching – alsoknown as tooth whitening

– is a common procedure ingeneral dentistry and especial-ly in cosmetic dentistry.

Your teeth enamel can bediscoloured by ageing, chemi-cal damage or stains from ex-ternal sources, including med-ication, coffee, tea and ciga-rettes.

Tooth bleaching can bedone on your own at home, but in the dentist’s office youhave a special light or laser, both of which use a whiten-ing gel.

This translucent bleachinggel is applied to the teeth and alaser beam is used to activatecrystals that absorb the beam’senergy and penetrate theenamel.

The time this takes dependson the degree of discoloration. One visit is usually enough forbrighter teeth, but often youneed to follow up with bleach-ing at home for the best results.

To do the bleaching at homeyou need a custom-fitted traythat contains bleaching gel andis worn over the teeth for ashort period each day.

Some people experience dis-comfort wearing the mouthtray, but your dentist can ad-just it for a better fit.

“Take-home” or “over-the-counter” bleaching is easy and

less expensive that a trip to thedentist, but results can varywith the kind of applicationused.

Results can sometimes beevident in a couple of days, butit usually takes a week or twoto see the full whitening.Meanwhile others might see noresults at all.

And while bleaching is quiteeffective, there can be short-term disadvantages, such assore gums or teeth due to thebleach.

Some individuals are morechemically sensitive. If you are, inform your dentist. He’ll testyour sensitivity to the bleachsolution.

When there is serious discol-oration, veneers or crownsmight be the better choice.

Championship side Burnleyprogressed to the fifth

round of the FA Cup, as theybeat West Bromwich Albion ofthe Premier League 3-1 onTuesday.

Wade Elliott gave them thelead just before half-time, andSteve Thompson added a sec-ond goal just after the break.

Gianni Zuiverloon pulled oneback on the hour, but Burnleyresponded positively and, withthree minutes remaining,Thompson added his second.

Burnley have already had aremarkable giant-killing runthis season, eliminatingFulham, Chelsea and Arsenalfrom the League Cup - beforegiving Tottenham Hotspur an

almighty scare. And they con-tinued that form on Tuesday.

Robbie Blake, the tormentorof Spurs, was again impressive, putting a first-half free-kickjust over.

Brian Jensen, Burnley's hugeDanish goalkeeper, made an ex-cellent save from RomanBednar five minutes before thebreak.

West Brom seemed dominantat that stage, but on the strokeof half-time a half-cleared ballfell for Elliott at the edge of thebox, and he lashed a superbvolley past Scott Carson.

Seven minutes into the sec-ond half, Burnley doubled theirlead. Christian Kalvenes' crosswas superb, and, althoughMartin Paterson's header hit

the back of Ryan Donk,Thompson swept in the re-bound.

That was perhaps unrepre-sentative of the balance of play, and West Brom pulled one backeight minutes later.

Full-back Zuiverloon, pushedinto midfield as West Bromchased the game, calmlystroked in his first for the club.

But Burnley dug in and, asWest Brom committed men for-ward, looked increasingly dan-gerous on the break.

The decisive third came on87 minutes, with Blake cuttingthe ball back for Thompson.

Burnley will be away to ei-ther Arsenal or Cardiff in thenext round.
